With the transition to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the intelligent information society, the paradigm of scientific inquiry has shifted toward data- and AI-driven inquiry, including prediction and simulation-based analysis. The 2022 Revised Science Curriculum has strengthened the use of digital inquiry tools and advanced science and technology-based inquiry. This study aims to develop an AI-based motion video analysis tool for objects and validate its educational validity to support the cultivation of digital literacy required by the 2022 Revised Science Curriculum and support data-based physics inquiry lessons.
This study applied a cyclical development research method: analysis-design-development-implementation-evaluation. During the design phase, four design principles were established: ensuring curriculum alignment, considering educational accessibility, providing integrated inquiry experiences, and enabling self-directed inquiry. Furthermore, to reflect the characteristics of data-driven inquiry, a 9-step KDD-based science inquiry model was developed by adapting the KDD process to the context of school science inquiry. Based on this, a system architecture was designed comprising an interface layer, a processing layer, and a visualization/output layer. The developed tool was implemented to comprehensively support the entire inquiry process within a web-based environment, including video upload, object tracking and time-series data generation, preprocessing, visualization, physical model fitting, and interpretation support. It also included an AI assistant function to support learners’ interpretation and decision-making throughout the inquiry process.
In the implementation phase, to demonstrate the applicability of the tool within a classroom context, free-fall motion and spring pendulum motion were selected as representative cases. The tool’s execution results and analysis outputs are presented. In the evaluation phase, a survey-based validity check was conducted with a panel of experts in science education and AI-integrated education. Quantitative and qualitative data were synthesized to analyze perceptions regarding curriculum alignment, field applicability, effectiveness in scientific inquiry, functionality, and ease of use. Analysis revealed that experts generally evaluated the tool positively for its educational value and potential utility, and the survey tool demonstrated acceptable reliability for an exploratory validation study.
This study demonstrated the potential for data-driven physics inquiry lessons aligned with the 2022 revised science curriculum and confirmed the feasibility of developing a digital inquiry tool that comprehensively supports the entire scientific inquiry process—from data collection to analysis, modeling, and interpretation—on a single web-based platform. In addition, an expert survey-based validity check indicated that the tool has promising educational utility in terms of curriculum alignment, inquiry effectiveness, and usability. Follow-up research should enhance the tool's field applicability by: validating learning effects through actual classroom implementation; expanding application to various school levels and physics phenomena; improving tracking and modeling performance; and verifying the quality of educational feedback provided by the AI assistant.
