This study addresses the structural gap between culturally diverse forms of identity expression and the normative standards embedded in mainstream fashion systems. It conceptualizes culturally marginalized consumers as individuals whose cultural identities are insufficiently considered in fashion design, purchase, and wearing practices, and argues that the resulting challenges constitute ill-defined design problems rather than isolated functional or aesthetic deficiencies. The purpose of this research is to develop TRIZ-based problem analysis worksheets that support the systematic definition and structural examination of fashion design problems experienced by these consumers.
Culturally marginalized consumers were classified into three groups: those grounded in ethnic and regional cultural backgrounds, religious dress practices, and sex and gender identity. While prior studies have primarily examined these groups through case-based or group-specific lenses, limited attention has been given to identifying shared problem structures that cut across different forms of cultural marginalization. Adopting a Design Science Research (DSR) approach, this study integrates empirical investigation with iterative artifact development to construct practical analytical frameworks for problem definition.
Analysis of fashion industry cases and qualitative data revealed three overarching problem types common across the groups: constraints on identity expression, conflicts with contemporary lifestyle, and limited body inclusivity. These problem types indicate that the fashion design challenges faced by culturally marginalized consumers are structurally constituted through the interaction of design elements, wearing contexts, and sociocultural conditions.
Based on these problem structures, selected TRIZ concepts were reconfigured and embedded in structured problem-analysis worksheets designed to guide analytical reasoning in fashion design contexts. Worksheets based on the IFR(Ideal Final Result) were developed to support articulating ideal identity expression under conflicting conditions, while worksheets based on the STC operator were designed to facilitate decomposing contextual and bodily constraints. The worksheets were qualitatively evaluated through expert focus group interviews and an applied pilot study.
The evaluation results indicate that the proposed problem analysis worksheets enhance analytical clarity and promote a shift from intuitive, symptom-oriented interpretations toward structurally grounded problem understanding. The findings further suggest that different types of fashion design problems require distinct analytical logics, with IFR-based worksheets being most effective for identity-related constraints and STC operator-based worksheets for conflicts involving lifestyle and body inclusivity.
By reframing the fashion design challenges of culturally marginalized consumers as structurally definable problems and by providing worksheet-based analytical artifacts to support systematic problem definition and analysis, this study offers a practical methodological framework for inclusive fashion design and extends the application of TRIZ to socially and culturally complex design contexts.
