본 연구는 메타버스 융합공연이 급격히 태동하고 진화한 2020년부터 2021년 사이, 50만 명 이상의 대규모 참여를 기록한 총 4건의 주요 공연 사례(트래비스 스콧의 <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Astronomical>, BTS의 <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><BANG BANG CON The Live>와 <!-- Not Allowed Attribute Filtered ( of the Soul ON:E) --><Map>, 아리아나 그란데의 <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Rift Tour>)를 전수 조사 방식으로 선정하여 질적 사례 연구를 수행하였다.

The Metaverse, emerging as the "Next Internet" in the early 21st century, garnered significant attention as a new paradigm for civilization amidst the unprecedented rapid expansion of non-face-to-face environments. In particular, the performing arts sector served as a field for experimenting with the scalability of virtual spaces, transcending spatio-temporal limitations and presenting global convergence performances of unprecedented scale. However, with the transition to the endemic era, public interest in the Metaverse cooled rapidly. This decline raises the need for critical reflection on the fact that early discourse focused excessively on technical implementation (Simulacra) while neglecting the user's agentic play (Mimicry). Therefore, employing Roger Caillois’ concept of Mimicry and Jean Baudrillard’s concept of Simulacra as theoretical frameworks, this study aims to systematically examine how Mimicry and Simulacra manifest in Metaverse convergence performances and how these two phenomena interact, and to derive the characteristics and application conditions for each type.
This study conducted a qualitative case study by selecting a total of four major performance cases (Travis Scott’s Astronomical, BTS’s BANG BANG CON The Live and Map of the Soul ON:E, and Ariana Grande’s Rift Tour) that recorded over 500,000 participants between 2020 and 2021, a period when Metaverse convergence performances rapidly emerged and evolved. The selection was conducted as a census of cases meeting specific criteria. The analysis confirmed that Mimicry (participatory performativity) and Simulacra (virtual implementation) operate as mutually independent dimensions in Metaverse convergence performances, and the nature of the performance is determined by the levels (high/low) and patterns of combination of these two elements.
Based on the interplay of these two concepts, four types of Metaverse convergence performances were identified. First, the Traditional Viewing Type (1st Quadrant), characterized by low levels of both elements, expanded spatial accessibility but offered limited interaction, representing an initial form. Second, the Spectacle Type (2nd Quadrant) featured maximized Simulacra, providing overwhelming visual experiences transcending physical laws but tending to be consumed as a one-time event. Third, the Fandom Ritual Type (3rd Quadrant), distinguished by emphasized Mimicry, focused on collective solidarity and ritualistic participation of the fandom mediated by virtual space. Finally, the Integrated Enhancement Type (4th Quadrant) represented an organic combination of a sophisticated virtual environment and active participation, offering individualized hyper-realistic experiences.
This study suggests that the sustainability of Metaverse convergence performances depends not merely on technical perfection but on the implementation of interaction design that allows participants to generate narratives within the virtual space. This research holds academic significance in presenting a new perspective to understand the Metaverse phenomenon not as a binary of success or failure but as a continuous spectrum based on the combination of participation and virtuality, and in establishing a theoretical foundation for analyzing and designing future convergence content.
