This study aims to examine the effects of moral norm–based message framing(proscriptive vs. prescriptive messages) on consumers’ pro-environmental consumption behavioral intentions, and to empirically investigate the mediating role of moral emotions (guilt and pride) as well as the moderating and moderated mediating effects of psychological distance (social distance and temporal distance) within the context of environmental communication. While prior research on green messaging has primarily focused on gain–loss framing or cognitive persuasion mechanisms, this study extends the existing literature by highlighting the emotion-based response mechanisms elicited by norm-based message framing.
To achieve this objective, two online experimental studies were conducted. Study 1 examined the effects of proscriptive message framing by manipulating social distance (near vs. distant). The results indicate that proscriptive message framing significantly increased consumers’ feelings of guilt, thereby supporting H1-1. Furthermore, the moderating effect of social distance was confirmed, such that proscriptive messages elicited stronger guilt responses when social distance was perceived as closer, supporting H1-2. In addition, guilt was found to mediate the relationship between proscriptive message framing and pro-environmental consumption behavioral intention, supporting H1-3. The results also demonstrated a significant moderated mediation effect, whereby social distance moderated the indirect effect of proscriptive message framing on behavioral intention through guilt, thus supporting H1-4.
Study 2 examined the effects of prescriptive message framing by manipulating temporal distance (near future vs. distant future). The findings show that prescriptive message framing significantly increased consumers’ feelings of pride, providing support for H2-1. The hypothesized moderating effect of temporal distance (H2-2), which proposed that prescriptive messages would elicit greater pride when temporal distance was perceived as more distant, was marginally supported (p = 0.066). Moreover, pride was found to mediate the relationship between prescriptive message framing and pro-environmental consumption behavioral intention, supporting H2-3. The moderated mediation effect of temporal distance on this indirect pathway (H2-4) was also marginally supported.
By integrating moral norm–based message framing, moral emotions, and psychological distance into a unified research model, this study contributes to the literature on environmental communication and consumer behavior. The findings further provide practical implications for designing emotion-based, context-sensitive message strategies in sustainability campaigns and environmental policy.
