This study proposes a data-driven decision support system for flowmeter selection in plant design processes. Conventional flowmeter selection practices heavily rely on engineers’ experience and intuition, often leading to inconsistencies in design quality and repetitive verification efforts. To address these limitations, this research develops an intelligent flowmeter recommendation system that integrates machine learning–based prediction using historical design data with document-based supplementary recommendations derived from manufacturer technical documents.
The proposed system is implemented as an automated workflow architecture encompassing data collection, preprocessing, prediction, result interpretation, and document-based knowledge augmentation. Non-structured flowmeter datasheets in image format are automatically parsed using GPT-based image analysis to extract key design variables and construct a structured dataset for machine learning. An XGBoost classification model is then trained to predict appropriate flowmeter types based on given process conditions. To ensure robustness under incomplete input conditions, a K-nearest neighbors (KNN)–based data completion mechanism is incorporated. Prediction results are subsequently translated into natural language responses to enhance usability for design engineers.
In addition, a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)–based AI recommendation agent is introduced to complement the machine learning predictions by leveraging manufacturer technical documents. This approach enables evidence-based recommendations for newly introduced technologies or manufacturer-specific application guidelines that are not covered in historical design data.
The practical applicability of the proposed system is evaluated using real plant project As-Built data. Comparative analysis shows that the machine learning–based AI recommendation agent achieves an 80% agreement rate with actual installed flowmeters, outperforming the expert judgment agreement rate of 71%. These results indicate that the proposed system can provide reliable, expert-level decision support in real-world plant design scenarios. The contributions of this study lie in presenting a data-driven flowmeter selection framework that supports digital transformation in plant engineering, with potential extensions toward digital twin–based design automation and decision support systems.
