This study examines the patterns of wearing decorations and commemorative medals by the Imperial Family of the Korean Empire during its transition to a modern honors system following the empire's establishment in the late 19th century. To overcome the scarcity of extant physical artifacts—many of which were lost in the 1917 Daejojeon[大造殿] fire—this research conducts a comprehensive analysis of 119 photographs featuring seven key imperial figures (Emperor Gojong[高宗皇帝], Emperor Sunjong[純宗皇帝], Prince Ui[義親王], Prince Yeong[英親王], Empress Sunjeonghyo[純貞孝皇后], Princess Ui[義親王妃], and Princess Yeongchin) taken between 1900 and 1945. By cross-referencing these visual materials with historical records, the study systematically categorizes the names, nationalities, and conferment dates of these honors. Furthermore, it explores the specific protocols and variations in wearing these decorations based on the gender of the wearer and the type of attire worn.
The study finds that the Korean Empire visualized the authority of the Imperial Family by establishing a systematic honors system, managed by the Pyo-hun-won[表勳院], which consisted of seven types of orders and six types of commemorative medals. The designs of these decorations incorporated motifs symbolizing the state and the imperial house—such as the Taegeuk, Mugunghwa(Rose of Sharon), Geumcheok[金尺], Seoseong[瑞星], and Ihwa(Plum Blossom)—alongside imagery like hawks and doves that aligned with the specific purpose of the conferment. Furthermore, the honors were strictly categorized and standardized. Based on rank, they were divided into the Grand Order[大勳位], Order[勳], and Merit[功]. Based on the form and method of wearing, they were classified into Grand Cordons[大綬], Neck Ribbons[中綬], Chest Ribbons[小綬], brooch-type decorations, and ribbon bars[略綬].
Regarding the wearing patterns by attire, the male members of the Imperial Family primarily wore their orders and medals on Western-style military uniforms; however, for commemorative purposes, they exceptionally wore them on the Gonryongpo[衮龍袍]. In contrast, the imperial women wore decorations on traditional garments such as the Wonsam and Dang-ui, creating a unique visual culture where tradition and modernity coexisted.
Notably, when wearing multinational decorations simultaneously, a rule existed to prioritize domestic honors. However, following the loss of national sovereignty, a shift occurred where Japanese decorations were placed in superior positions. This transition confirms that the power dynamics of the shifting international landscape were directly projected onto the imperial honors system.
This study marks the first comprehensive survey of orders and medals depicted in photographs of the Imperial Family. By reflecting the complexities of wearing multinational honors simultaneously, it establishes a new criterion for estimating the dates of historical photographs. Furthermore, it is significant in that it illuminates the power dynamics of modern international relations through the shifting priorities in the placement of decorations.
However, this research has a limitation in that the exact conferment dates for all decorations could not be fully identified. Future research is needed to investigate the causes of "selective exclusion"—cases where recorded honors were not actually worn in practice. It is hoped that this study will serve as foundational material for the historical authentication of period costumes in modern settings and provide useful indicators for dating and analyzing imperial photographs that may be discovered in the future.
