This study examines how social experiments mediated by agriculture become possible within rural communities. This study focuses on the everyday experiences within the formation and transformation of relationships and subjectivities embedded within such practices of rural communities. Previous studies have analyzed practices in rural communities through the perspectives of alternatives and community, or by focusing on organizational structures and their networks.
Therefore, this study examines agriculture-based cooperative initiatives namely, the Young Collaboration Farm, the Happy Farm, and the Commoner Village School, located in Janggok-myeon and Hongdong-myeon, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. It draws on auto-ethnographic research conducted through the researcher’s long-term participation in rural community activities, alongside an analysis of documents produced by members. On that basis, this study conceptualizes these practices as a “collective.” A mode of action in which multiple actors interact and operate together. Rather than a fixed organization, this collective is understood as a relational web that repeatedly undergoes differentiation, expansion, and contraction.
The activities of the “Hongseong nong(農, agricultural)-collective” are created as practices of “learning” and “care” mediated by agriculture. These practices are not organized by a single organization or unified ideology. Instead, they emerge through the connection, differentiation, and accumulation of repetitive practices among diverse actors, and networks. While individual organizations pursue different functions, interests, and objectives. But they shared places, agricultural work, everyday life. This generate collective processes through which the elements of “agriculture”, “learning”, and “care” are formed. These three elements function not merely in instrumental terms but as mediating practices that reshape participants’ relationships with rural communities, senses of everyday life, experiences of rural seasonality, and understandings of agriculture and rurality. Especially, “learning” generated through everyday practices enables actors to form themselves through loosely connected solidarities and shared time-space experiences.
Agricultural labor serves as a key medium through which diverse actors—including young people, disadvantaged, local residents, outlanders, and rural returner—enter into relationships and participate in rural community practices. For young people with limited farming experience or capital, agriculture becomes an experimental field for settling in rural areas and an educational way that integrates learning with everyday life, enabling the embodied acquisition of rural ways of living as well rural community relations. At the same time, it functions as a medium through which disadvantaged live within rural community rather than within institutional facilities, positioning the rural community itself as a site of care.
Finally, this study conceptualizes the mechanism that generates Hongseong nong-collective experiences not as a fixed “structure” but as “a process of mapping”. This process dismantles, differentiates, and reconnects existing structures while continuously producing practices based on agriculture, learning, and care. Through such mapping, relationships between individuals and their lives are reconfigured, giving rise to multiple and shifting collectives depending on their participants.
