This research empirically investigates differences in consumer responses according to virtual influencer appearance type (human-like vs. anime-like) and the disclosure of corporate social responsibility (CSR) information. Although the use of virtual influencers as CSR message deliverers has rapidly increased in recent digital environments, limited research has examined how the visual and emotional characteristics of virtual influencers shape the reception of CSR messages. To address this gap, the present research conducted two experimental studies.
Study 1 examined the basic effect of virtual influencer appearance type on brand attitude in a context where CSR messages were held constant. Using CSR-related news and advertising stimuli from the real brand Disney, the results showed that the anime-like virtual influencer condition elicited significantly more favorable brand attitudes than the human-like condition.
Study 2 was conducted to explore the psychological mechanisms underlying this effect. Using a fictitious hotel brand (Hotel NOVEN) and virtual influencer–based stimuli, the study tested whether perceived cuteness and perceived novelty sequentially mediated the effect of influencer appearance type on brand attitude using PROCESS Model 6. The results indicated that anime-like virtual influencers generated higher levels of perceived cuteness than human-like influencers, which in turn increased perceived novelty. This sequential mediation pathway ultimately led to more positive brand attitudes.
Overall, this research provides theoretical contributions by demonstrating that virtual influencer appearance types can structurally shape consumers’ affective and cognitive responses in CSR communication contexts. Furthermore, the findings offer practical implications by suggesting that firms’ strategic selection of virtual influencer types in CSR communication can play a critical role in shaping brand evaluations.
