Stretchable strain sensors with both high sensitivity and a wide working window are essential for the development of wearable devices, human–machine interfaces, and robotic systems. However, sensitivity and stretchability are inherently in a trade-off relationship, making it challenging to achieve both properties simultaneously. In this study, bilayer wrinkled strain sensors based on two-dimensional reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and three-dimensional vertically grown graphene on carbon nanofibers (VG@CNFs) were designed to mitigate this inherent trade-off and optimize performance within a practical strain range. A pre-cracked bottom layer and a top layer with a gradient wrinkle structure arising from a thickness gradient were introduced to induce sequential crack opening under applied strain. As a result, while the maximum stretchability was slightly reduced to 220% compared to conventional single-layer uniform wrinkled structures, the sensor maintained stable signals under repeated strain cycles up to 200%, a range sufficient for most practical applications. Furthermore, the sensor exhibited high sensitivity across the strain range, with a maximum gauge factor (GF) of 19,005.5 at specific strain levels. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the structural integrity of the hybrid VG@CNF/rGO network, which provides stable conductive pathways. The optimized sensor exhibited a fast response time of 103 ms, and stable resistance changes with long-term durability over more than 2,000 cycles. The sensor could be applied across a wide range of activities, from human respiration to robotic motion. Its integration with an Internet of Things (IoT) module enabled real-time monitoring of equipment status anytime and anywhere. In summary, this work presents a structural design strategy to effectively mitigate the trade-off between sensitivity and stretchability within a practical operational window, demonstrating the broad application potential of the bilayer wrinkled VG@CNF/rGO strain sensors.
