Single-crystalline (SC) layered oxides have been widely considered as promising cathode materials for improving battery durability because their monolithic grain structure effectively suppresses micro-cracking and surface degradation. Nevertheless, their broader utilization has been constrained by the prevailing belief that SC morphologies intrinsically suffer from sluggish lithium-ion diffusion compared with polycrystalline (PC) particles. In this work, we challenge this long-standing assumption by isolating intrinsic kinetic behavior from particle-size effects. Using active materials as matched size (~10 µm) and applying the Atlung method, we demonstrate that SC particles exhibit superior lithium-ion diffusion kinetics throughout most of the upper-voltage discharge region (4.3–3.6 V), surpassing the performance of PC counterparts. The diffusion limitations reported in earlier studies emerge only in the lower-voltage range (<3.6 V), revealing that the diffusion barrier is strongly voltage-dependent rather than an inherent drawback of the SC structure. In-situ X-ray diffraction microstrain analysis further indicates that the continuous crystallographic pathways in SC particles enable effective strain relaxation
during phase transitions, facilitating rapid lithium transport where it is most critical.

Beyond these intrinsic material-level advantages, high-rate performance at 2–5 C-rate is governed primarily by the electrode microstructure—specifically the pore distribution and resulting ionic resistance (Rion). In the in-situ synchroton measurements, the SC cathode exhibited a larger degree of c-axis lattice expansion during discharge at 0.2 C compared with the PC counterpart. Under the high-rate condition of 1C, the SC material still showed a greater maximum c-axis value except that the overall depth of reaction was lower than that of the PC cathode because the entire SC particle did not fully participate in the lithiation. These results originate from the pronounced crystallographic plane development in SC particles. The strong orientation along the c-axis causes the entire lattice to respond more coherently during Li insertion, yet the extended and continuous planes also provide relatively unobstructed pathways that facilitate lithium-ion transport within the bulk particle. By comparing SC and PC cathodes synthesized to have the same particle size, we were able to isolate intrinsic kinetic behavior from size effects. This systematic comparison clearly demonstrated that the lithium-ion diffusion of the SC material is superior to that of the PC material.
