Lithium-rich manganese-based (LRM) layered cathodes have received growing interest as potential candidates for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to their high energy density, which arises from coupled cationic–anionic redox reactions. In this study, we systematically investigated the structural evolution and transition-metal oxidation state variations of LRM cathodes under various temperature conditions through a combination of electrochemical testing and synchrotron-based analyses, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). To isolate the intrinsic temperature effect, the upper cut-off voltages at 45 °C and 60 °C were adjusted to obtain an equivalent charge capacity as that achieved at 4.8 V and 30 °C, thereby ensuring an equivalent amount of lithium deintercalation across all temperature conditions. This initial capacity-matched protocol reveals that the observed degradation is predominantly governed by temperature rather than by differences in lithium extraction. Although higher temperatures initially promote faster electrochemical kinetics and increase capacity, extended cycling at higher temperatures triggers irreversible degradation processes. Such degradation is primarily associated with oxygen release, which results in severe structural transformation and capacity fading. Therefore, designing durable LRM cathodes requires not only leveraging the kinetic benefits of elevated temperature but also mitigating irreversible degradation mechanisms.
