This study presents the development of an automated control logic system for Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) within digital substations, aimed at enhancing operational stability and reliability. By integrating core power equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, protective relays, and SCADA systems with modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT), digital substations support more efficient and intelligent power grid management.
The proposed system continuously collects real-time data on load conditions, voltage, frequency, and power factor, enabling optimized power distribution through automated load adjustment. Voltage regulation is achieved using an On Load Tap Changer (OLTC), which responds dynamically to fluctuations. A centralized IED platform allows seamless network-based communication, ensuring timely data sharing across substation components. Real-time data exchange via the process bus enhances the precision and responsiveness of transformer and breaker operations. To further boost reliability, a machine learning-based fault prediction module is incorporated to detect abnormalities before they escalate allowing for immediate corrective actions.
At the heart of the predictive engine lies the Random Forest algorithm, which demonstrated superior performance among the models tested. It achieved a precision of 75%, a recall of 82%, an F1-score of 78%, and an overall accuracy of 74%, making it the most suitable model for fault detection in this context. A user-friendly visualization system was also developed, offering both manual and autonomous control modes for substation operators.
The system was tested across multiple fault scenarios, and the results confirmed its effectiveness in identifying failures and initiating timely responses. The OLTC function successfully stabilized voltage levels within a ±5% range through automatic tap adjustments. The IED control system leverages machine learning, particularly Random Forest, to predict faults and automatically adjust parameters like voltage, frequency, and temperature.
In summary, this study demonstrates the potential of IED-based automation combined with machine learning for fault prediction in enhancing the reliability of digital substations. The findings validate the practical applicability of these technologies in real-world operational settings. Future work should expand on this foundation by addressing a wider range of fault conditions, improving model resilience, and incorporating support for inverter-based resources and complex multi-fault scenarios.
