Electric vehicles (EVs) powered by lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are gaining traction as a solution for sustainable transportation, offering advantages such as reduced emissions and lower operating costs compared with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. However, the quest for LIBs with high energy density has become a long-term endeavor for applications, including EVs and smart grids. Accordingly, significant efforts towards the development of silicon (Si)-based anodes have prompted attempts to replace conventional graphite (Gr)-based anodes.
Here, we investigate the behavioral phenomena of each active material during the lithiation in Gr/Si composite electrodes. In addition, we investigated the degradation mechanism of the Gr/Si composite anode fabricated through dry electrode process at a high areal capacity (7 mAh cm−2).
First, by fabricating Gr/Si composite electrodes and investigating their lithiation behavior, we found that lithium-ions that had not yet reacted with Si during lithiation migrated to Gr. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity of Si was enhanced by the presence of Gr, facilitating electron transfer within the electrode. As a result, the Gr/Si composite electrode exhibited a rate capability significantly higher than the expected capacity calculated from its individual components.
Second, Gr/Si composite electrodes were fabricated using a double-layered dry process method to investigate their long-term cycling stability. When the layer containing a high Si content was positioned at the electrode surface, it provided advantages in terms of initial rate capability. However, the electrode structure with a Gr-rich surface exhibited superior rate capability after 100 cycles. Electrochemical and simulation analysis revealed that Si located on the surface experienced accelerated degradation due to more active lithium-Si reactions compared with Si in the bottom layer.
Through this study, we aim to provide insights into the electrode design that can improve the fast-charging capability and cycle stability of Si-based electrodes. We also hope that the findings of this work will contribute to the development and commercialization for high energy density, Si-based LIBs.
