ragging is a representative form of non-prehensile manipulation in which a robot relocates an object to a desired pose by maintaining top contact through its hand or a tool, without establishing a firm grasp. This approach is particularly useful in environment where workspace is limited or where grasping is infeasible due to the object’s shape or size. However, the use of surface contact introduces significant challenges for analysis and control. Unlike point contact, it requires modeling the entire contact patch, leading to complex friction behaviors that are difficult to predict. This thesis proposes a soft-contact based dragging manipulation frame work for relocating a planar object to a desired position and orientation. The friction between the robot, object, ground are modeled using a limit surface vi formulation, and based on this model, an Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) controller was constructed that uses the robot’s normal force and translational velocity as control inputs. The proposed controller generates stable trajectories by considering the various contact mode transitions that occur during dragging. Proposed framework is validated through both numerical simulations and real-robot experiments. In simulation, the controller reliably converged across a set of initial and target configurations, achieving an average position error of approximately 0.9 mm and an average orientation error of 1.5°. Experiments using a Franka Research 3 robot also demonstrated accurate performance, yielding an average position error of 1.0 mm and an average orientation error of 1.66° at the target pose. These results show that the proposed controller can perform stable dragging manipulation in real environments by leveraging contact mode transitions, even in the presence of moderate uncertainties in physical parameters.
