Food waste condensate (FWC) is recognized as a promising feedstock due to its high concentration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetic, propionic, butyric, and valeric acids. Traditionally regarded as waste, FWC offers significant potential for the sustainable production of bio-based chemicals applicable in bioenergy, green chemistry, and advanced materials within a circular bioeconomy framework. The recovery of SCFAs from FWC not only contributes to waste minimization but also promotes carbon-neutral processing, aligning with the principles of a circular bioeconomy.
In this study, the recovery performance and transport mechanisms of SCFAs from FWC were investigated using both virgin polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes and PVDF membranes surface modified with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrimethoxysilane (PFOTMS). The PFOTMS-modified membranes exhibited a notably higher recovery of valeric acid (62.8 ± 0.4%) compared to acetic acid (2.28 ± 0.2%), indicating strong selectivity toward longer-chain hydrophobic SCFAs. This selective transport is attributed to hydrophobic–hydrophobic interactions between the perfluorinated membrane surface and the alkyl chains of SCFAs.
Real-time monitoring of membrane wetting was conducted using optical coherence tomography (OCT). While virgin PVDF membranes exhibited considerable wetting and fouling, evidenced by reduced contact angles and elevated surface energy, PFOTMS-modified membranes retained their surface properties with minimal changes in wettability and porosity. These findings highlight the potential of superhydrophobic membranes for long-term, stable operation in membrane contactor systems for efficient SCFAs recovery from complex organic waste streams.
