Rechargeable batteries require not only high energy density but also optimized power performance and cost-effectiveness. To increase energy density, the amount of conductive additive is minimized to maximize the proportion of active material. Currently, the conductive additive used in electrodes is shifting from carbon black to carbon nanotubes (CNTs), owing to their superior electrical properties. This advantage enables the fabrication of electrodes and cells with a reduced CNT content. However, due to the inherent agglomeration tendency of CNTs, improving their dispersion is essential to form a uniform conductive network within the electrode. Therefore, both processing efficiency and electrochemical performance must be considered when designing the cell.
In this study, the CNT length was controlled to enhance dispersion and subsequently improve electrochemical performance. A ball‐milling process was used to adjust CNT length under fixed processing conditions, except ball-mill time. After ball milling, the reduction in CNT length and the conductivity of CNT powder were confirmed. After fabrication electrode, degree of conductive agent dispersion within the electrode was evaluated. The results demonstrate that the optimized CNT length takes both conductivity and improved dispersion, and leads to enhanced electrochemical performance.
