Wet-chemical synthesis has played a central role in enabling precise control over the morphology and composition of colloidal nanoparticles, leading to the development of diverse nanostructures with tunable optical and catalytic properties. Continued advancements in synthetic strategies and mechanistic understanding of wet-chemical synthesis techniques have propelled the development of various functional nanomaterials. Among the various structural designs, plasmonic nanoparticles with engineered nanogaps have shown exceptional promise due to their ability to concentrate electromagnetic near-field within the nanogaps. However, achieving uniform and reproducible open nanogaps within single nanoparticles through controlled wet-chemical synthesis remains a significant challenge, which demands a deeper understanding of nanoparticle growth mechanisms and precise regulation of chemical parameters.
This thesis presents multistep wet-chemical synthesis strategies for fabricating plasmonic nanoparticles with precisely engineered nanogaps. These approaches enabled the creation of unique nanogap structures with tunable plasmonic properties and exceptional near-field focusing capabilities. Our methodology incorporates several chemical reactionsincluding eccentric and concentric Ag/Au growth, Galvanic replacement, the Kirkendall effect, one-pot cascade reactions, well-faceted Au growth, and trench formationachieved through meticulous control over precursor concentrations, reaction kinetics, and sequences at each stage of synthesis.
From single-particle surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy measurements, the resulting nanostructures exhibited strong and reproducible electromagnetic near-field focusing capabilities in a single entity. Remarkably, some of these nanostructures demonstrated single-particle surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy enhancement factors exceeding 109, far surpassing those of conventional plasmonic nanoparticles.
In addition to optimizing electromagnetic enhancement, efforts were made to facilitate selective capturing of analyte at nanogaps via chemical interactions. This was achieved by incorporating materials such as Al plates, Ni plates, Ni ions, or antibodies. By combining the strong and reproducible electromagnetic near-field focusing with efficient and selective target analyte capture at nanogaps, these nanogap-engineered structures were utilized for SERS-based sensing applications. Demonstrated uses included the highly sensitive and selective detection of SARS-CoV-2 viruses, proteins with biological tags, and the chemical warfare agent simulants.
