To enhance the output and efficiency of hybrid energy harvesting systems utilizing triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) and electromagnetic generators (EMG), it is essential to exploit their frequency-dependent characteristics. While the output power of a TENG is proportional to the frequency, that of an EMG is proportional to the square of the frequency, making TENGs more efficient in low-frequency regimes and EMGs more effective at higher frequencies. This study presents a self-adaptive hybrid energy harvesting system featuring a mechanical switch that activates or deactivates the EMG at a specific frequency.
The mechanical switch was designed based on the snap-through buckling phenomenon. To precisely regulate the rotational speed at which the EMG operates, the switching conditions were analyzed as a function of design parameters through both finite element modeling (FEM) and experimental validation. By implementing a structure where the switch reversibly engages and disengages in response to changes in rotational speed, a fully passive system was realized without the need for external intervention. This work provides a robust design strategy and fabrication method for mechanical switches that control EMG operation under specific conditions. Future work will involve integrating the system with DC conversion circuits and energy storage units to verify its practical applicability by powering electronic devices and sensors.
