This study aims to empirically examine the impact of media exposure during mandatory military service on changes in post-discharge streaming performance of male K-pop artists. While previous studies have largely discussed military service as a period of activity suspension or performance gap, artists in the digital platform environment continue to experience various forms of media exposure during military service, including broadcasts, online content, and radio airplay. Nevertheless, empirical research remains limited regarding the mechanisms through which such media exposure is linked to subsequent changes in performance after discharge.
Accordingly, this study conceptualizes the military service period not merely as a hiatus but as a distinct analytical phasein which the effects of media exposure accumulate and are restructured. Focusing on male K-pop artists who completed mandatory military service, we analyze the relationship between media exposure events occurring during military service and post-discharge streaming performance using weekly panel data comprising 1,558 observations. Both a traditional linear regression model and an XGBoost regression model are employed to capture nonlinear relationships and interactions among variables, and SHAP analysis is applied to interpret the underlying mechanisms of media exposure effects. Artist activity type (group versus solo) is included as a moderating variable to examine structural differences in performance dynamics. The results indicate that the effects of media exposure during military service on streaming performance changes exhibit a nonlinear structurerather than a simple linear relationship. While the linear regression model fails to identify statistically significant media effects, the XGBoost model demonstrates superior predictive performance. In particular, media exposure during military service influences post-discharge streaming performance indirectlythrough the maintenance and expansion of the SNS fanbase. Notably, radio exposure demonstrates a distinct threshold effect, contributing to performance changes only when exposure frequency exceeds a certain level. Case analyses further reveal that performance spikes are more closely associated with fan-targeted content and integrated media exposure structures than with simple broadcast frequency. In contrast, despite the structural differences in content generation, artist activity type (group versus solo) did not exert a significant direct effect on streaming performance changes.
By empirically demonstrating that media exposure during military service influences post-discharge performance structures through fanbase-mediated mechanisms, this study reinterprets the military service period as a strategically manageable phase rather than a mere performance gap. These findings provide practical implications for media strategy design and resource allocation during artists’ military service.
