The solvent−free electrode fabrication has emerged as a mainstream approach in lithium−ion batteries (LIBs) by bypassing issues associated with wet processing of high−loading electrodes. However, in anodes, the PTFE binder faces fundamental challenges arising from its reductive decomposition at low potentials, which not only lowers initial coulombic efficiency but also degrades electrode integrity due to PTFE decomposition from volume expansion. To address these issues, previous studies have mainly focused on suppressing PTFE decomposition through strategies such as polymer coatings and electrolyte additives. However, little attention has been paid to two important aspects in dry−processed graphite: 1) the poor wettability caused by PTFE and graphite hydrophobicity, and 2) the impact of surface by−products from PTFE decomposition on electrochemical performance. Herein, we propose p−toluenesulfonyl isocyanate (TosNCO) as an electrolyte additive which preferentially reduced (1.85 V vs. Li/Li+) prior to PTFE (0.7 V vs. Li/Li+), forming robust sulfur−based solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on both graphite and PTFE surfaces and successfully inhibiting PTFE decomposition. In addition, the amphiphilic structure of TosNCO with a hydrophobic tolyl group and polar isocyanate and sulfonyl groups reduces interfacial energy with dry−processed graphite, enhancing wettability and electrolyte infiltration despite the hydrophobicity of both graphite and PTFE. Moreover, we determine that PTFE decomposition in dry−processed graphite generates insulating by−products that locally accumulate on the graphite surface, hindering ion and electron transport. This phenomenon was confirmed by in situ EIS and four−terminal resistance measurements, which revealed increased resistance due to PTFE decomposition, and the introduction of TosNCO effectively mitigated this increase by suppressing PTFE degradation. Based on these benefits, dry−processed graphite with TosNCO achieved high−areal capacity (~5.8mAh cm-2) and stable cycling performance in full cells coupled with high−Ni NCM cathodes. This study provides a practical solution to key challenges in dry−processed electrodes, enhancing their commercial viability toward high−energy density LIBs.
