We propose a characteristic-based similarity approach to factor timing. Previous factor timing approaches assume that the relationship between factor characteristics and future returns is constant across market states. Our approach relaxes this assumption by identifying historical periods with similar valuation spreads and forming forecasts from their conditional returns. This allows the timing signal to vary locally with market conditions. By using endogenous factor characteristics rather than external macroeconomic variables, we ground the timing signal directly in the valuation structure of factors. Empirical results show that this strategy outperforms static and linear benchmarks. Decomposing by state similarity confirms that outperformance stems from periods with similar historical periods. Our study contributes to the growing literature on timing factors in the factor zoo.
