The electrochemical and interfacial behavior of the cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) formed on Ni-rich cathode by representative electrolyte additives such as vinylene carbonate (VC), fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), and 1,3-propanesultone (PS) is investigated at high voltage. To increase energy density of the NCM, a high cutoff voltage is essential. However, high cutoff voltage induces severe electrolyte oxidation and the NCM suffers from degradation, resulting in rapid capacity fading. In a low voltage environment (4.5V), additives improve cycling performance by forming effective CEI, which suppresses electrolyte oxidation. As the cutoff voltage increases (4.9V), PS is still effective. In contrast, VC and FEC no longer protect the surface, causing electrode to undergo severe degradation. The main cause of this phenomenon is the collapse of CEI at high voltage, as shown by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In conclusion, PS can suppress electrolyte oxidation by CEI formation even at high voltage (4.9V). However, VC and FEC are not effective at high voltage (4.9V) because of CEI collapse.
