Lithium metal anodes have attracted significant attention as next generation high energy anodes owing to their exceptionally high theoretical capacity and the lowest electrochemical potential. However, their practical application remains fundamentally limited by their host-less reaction nature, which lacks a structural framework to support lithium deposition. During repeated plating and stripping processes, lithium metal undergoes severe volume fluctuations, leading to dendrite growth, interfacial instability, and reduced electrochemical reversibility. These issues induce localized current density concentration and nonuniform lithium deposition, ultimately degrading both cell lifetime and safety, thereby hindering the practical implementation of lithium metal anodes.
To alleviate these intrinsic limitations, lithium-ion/metal hybrid anodes that combine the advantages of lithium-ion batteries have recently been proposed as a promising alternative. This strategy is based on the stable lithium intercalation reaction of graphite, which ensures structural stability of the electrode, while excess lithium is reversibly deposited to utilize additional capacity. In particular, graphite, which is widely used in lithium-ion batteries, can serve as an effective host material for lithium storage, suppressing uncontrolled lithium growth and promoting more stable lithium deposition behavior.
In this study, we focus on the practical realization of such hybrid anodes from an electrode structure perspective, with particular emphasis on controlling the tortuosity of graphite anodes. By exploiting the diamagnetic nature of graphite, magnetically assisted vertical alignment of graphite particles is employed to reduce ionic conduction resistance within the electrode. This structural design effectively shortens lithium-ion diffusion pathways and enables the internal pore spaces of the electrode to function as homogeneous lithium reservoirs. The resulting low tortuosity graphite electrode promotes efficient lithium-ion migration, thereby preferentially inducing lithium deposition within the electrode interior rather than on the electrode surface. Furthermore, this study identifies electrode tortuosity as a key structural parameter governing both lithium-ion migration and lithium metal deposition behavior, and demonstrates that magnetically assisted tortuosity control provides a practical design guideline for lithium ion and lithium metal hybrid anodes capable of achieving both high-energy-density and stable electrochemical operation.
