Since the late 19th century, Alternating Current (AC) transmission has formed the foundation of power systems, following early debates on the most efficient and practical method of power delivery between AC and Direct Current (DC). However, the recent expansion of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to address climate change, the rapid adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs), and the increase in data centers driven by the advancement of AI technologies have made the integration of DC sources and DC loads into power systems an inevitable development. As a result, the need for dedicated DC distribution systems has emerged, along with AC/DC hybrid power systems, which combine existing AC infrastructure with additional DC networks as a viable solution.
This study investigates the limitations of conventional reclosing schemes in an AC/DC hybrid radial distribution system constructed using a Full-Bridge Modular Multilevel Converter (FB-MMC) modeled in MATLAB/Simulink. The analysis considers permanent faults, including Pole-to-Ground (PTG) faults, Pole-to-Pole (PTP) faults and intersystem faults, and evaluates the corresponding fault current waveforms. For temporary faults, the applicability of conventional AC reclosing techniques is examined.
In particular, the study highlights that in the case of PTG and PTP faults, a rapid rise in fault current occurs due to the discharge of capacitors in the FB submodules. When traditional reclosing methods are applied under such conditions, fault current may reach its peak before trip of circuit breaker occurs, resulting in overcurrent stress on the IGBT switches in the MMC, which can lead to damage or destruction of device.
Based on these findings, this research develops classification and reclosing algorithm using Multi-Layer Perceptron(MLP) known as feed-forward deep neural network(FFDNN) which is typical model of DNN. Also, result of reclosing procedure is verified in MATLAB/Simulink simulation according to fault type such as temporary fault and permanent fault. This verification is expected to contribute to enhancing the reliability of the power system.
