Digital Light Processing (DLP)–based additive manufacturing is a promising technique for fabricating complex architectures with high spatial resolution and rapid build rates, offering significant potential for functional 3D printing applications. However, most commercially available photocurable resins are intrinsically insulating, which limits their applicability in systems requiring electrical functionality. Although conductive resins incorporating metallic or carbon-based fillers have been developed, particle-based approaches introduce ultraviolet light scattering and sedimentation, reducing the optical penetration depth (Dp) and hindering high-resolution DLP printing.
In this study, an Ag+ ion–based conductive resin was designed by uniformly dispersing metal ions at the molecular scale, enabling stable photopolymerization without sacrificing ultraviolet transparency. Jacobs working curve analysis yielded a large optical penetration depth (Dp = 797.1 µm) and a critical exposure energy of 38.40 m J cm-1, while FTIR spectroscopy confirmed approximately 90 % monomer conversion within 1.5 s of UV exposure. Based on this photopolymerization behavior, line patterns with widths ranging from 150 to 600 µm were fabricated with high fidelity, and the printed structures exhibited uniform shrinkage of approximately 13 % after thermal reduction.
During thermal reduction, Ag+ ions were converted into a continuous silver nanoparticle (AgNP) network, resulting in a high electrical conductivity of up to 341 S cm-1. Concurrently, the Ag network also functioned as a heat transfer pathway, leading to anisotropic thermal transport, with in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivities of 1.49 and 0.31 W m-1 K-1, respectively. In addition, increases in Young’s modulus and tensile strength confirmed enhanced mechanical stiffness and structural reliability.
Overall, the Ag+ ion–based conductive resin proposed in this study presents a new DLP material design strategy that simultaneously satisfies photopolymerization compatibility and functional transport properties. The uniformly dispersed Ag+ ions are converted into a continuous silver nanoparticle network through thermal reduction, forming multifunctional conductive pathways that enable both electrical and thermal transport throughout the printed structure. Consequently, this study extends the scope of conductive DLP materials beyond purely electrical functionality and demonstrates their potential as a 3D printing–based functional material platform in which electrical and thermal transport properties can be integrally engineered.
