This dissertation presents a multi-mode reconfigurable switched-capacitor (SC) converter architecture designed to achieve high power efficiency and density over a wide input range of 3 — 18.4 V.
The proposed converter supports three operating modes—4:1, 2:1, and 1:1—and dynamically reconfigures its topology according to the input volt-age and load condition to optimize overall performance.
A Dickson-based configuration is employed for the 4:1 mode to realize a high conversion ratio, a cascaded structure is adopted for the 2:1 mode to maximize intermediate-range efficiency, and a bypass path is activated in the 1:1 mode to minimize unnecessary conduction loss.
A key contribution of this work is the voltage-borrowing gate-drive technique, which effectively mitigates the voltage-swing limitation of conventional bootstrap circuits.
This approach provides sufficient gate to source voltage(Vgs) for high-side NMOS switches and substantially reduces gate-drive loss, thereby maintaining high efficiency even at elevated input voltages.
Furthermore, a multi-reference adaptive regulation network is integrated to provide real-time protection and feedback control.
This network simultaneously monitors the input current, output current, and output voltage, adaptively adjusting the gate-drive strength to ensure stable regulation under wide variations of load and input conditions.
The prototype, implemented in a 4 mm × 4.4 mm 11×12-ball WLCSP, achieves an output voltage range of 3–4.6 V, a load current up to 13 A, and a peak efficiency of 97.4 %, delivering tens of watts of output power.
The compact and scalable implementation makes the proposed converter well-suited for mobile SoCs, AI accelerators, IoT nodes, and compact medical electronics, where efficiency and integration are critical.
Overall, this dissertation demonstrates that advanced reconfigurable SC converter architectures can achieve their theoretical potential in practice, providing a high-efficiency, high-density, and regulation-robust power-management solution for next-generation electronic systems.
