Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been the key driver for powering portable devices, electronic vehicles and stationary energy storage. Thus, silicon/graphite (Si/Gr) anode is gaining considerable attention as an anode material for LIBs due to its higher theoretical capacity (~3579 mAh g-1) than conventional graphite anode (~372 mAh g-1). However, the significant volume expansion of silicon during lithiation-delithiation process seriously deteriorates the structural stability of silicon-graphite electrode. To overcome this issue and achieve long-term cyclability, it is crucial to design functional binders that can effectively accommodate the large volume changes of silicon particles. Herein, we propose a polyacrylic acid – hydroquinone (PAA–HQ) crosslinked binder that can flexibly respond to external pressure changes by enhancing the elasticity of PAA chains. PAA is highly suitable as a binder for silicon based anodes because its abundant carboxyl groups can form hydrogen bonding interactions with the surface –OH groups of silicon particles. However, because PAA is intrinsically rigid, we designed a PAA–HQ binder by incorporating HQ, a small molecule filler that imparts flexibility to the PAA network. Furthermore, the π-π interactions between the benzene ring in hydroquinone and graphite, and hydroxyl groups and silicon leads to construction of mechanically stable Si/Gr electrode. Therefore, this binder is expected to enhance the structural integrity of silicon–graphite electrodes.
