In this pager presents the design and experimental validation of a ballscrew and bevel-gear based actuation mechanism for quadruped robot legs. Conventional quadruped designs employing four-bar linkages or belt-driven systems are hindered by high reflected inertia resulting from large-ratio gear reductions, which significantly constrain both energy efficiency and dynamic performance during locomotion. To overcome these limitations, an integrated actuation architecture is proposed that combines ball-screw linear actuators, bevel-gear transmission, and slider–crank kinematics. The proposed mechanism achieves enhanced transmission efficiency and improved backdrivability while reducing leg inertia through proximal motor placement near the robot body. Furthermore, the design enables integrated force distribution and minimizes mechanical complexity through a unified hip–knee joint architecture. This work makes three primary contributions. First, a complete mechanical design with detailed geometric and structural specifications for all actuation components is established. Second, comprehensive analytical kinematic and dynamic models are developed based on Lagrangian mechanics, yielding closed-form expressions that characterize both system motion and force transmission behavior. Third, extensive experimental validation is performed, encompassing efficiency measurement across various operating conditions, force-transmission characterization, backdrivability assessment, and dynamic motion verification during representative quadruped gaits. Experimental results confirm that the proposed mechanism achieves superior transmission efficiency and excellent backdrivability while reducing overall mechanical complexity compared to conventional gear-driven systems. The unified structure maintains high stiffness and precision, providing a lightweight, energy-efficient, and dynamically capable actuation solution for quadruped locomotion.
