4Ss 학습방법 속에서 소매틱 발레의 원리인 BRACED(Breathe, Relax, Align, Connect, Expect, Dance)를 기반으로 체화과정을 탐구하고자 하였다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the somatic ballet embodied process experienced by college ballet majors in a ballet class utilizing the 4Ss (Simple, Slow, Small, Smooth) somatic ballet learning method. Within the 4Ss learning method, this study aimed to explore the embodied process based on the principles of somatic ballet, BRACED (Breathe, Relax, Align, Connect, Expect, Dance).
The methodology for this study involved a qualitative case study design with three college ballet majors participating in ballet classes utilizing the 4Ss learning method. A total of eight classes were conducted, and data were collected through learning logs, interviews, and observations. The collected data were analyzed using the Stake method, a case study analysis method. All research procedures were discussed and reviewed by a somatic ballet expert and approved by the Sungkyunkwan University Institutional Review Board (IRB) (SKKU 2025-08-090-003). The study results showed that the 4Ss learning methods each influenced B, R, A, and C, which, in turn, positively impacted the development of E and D, thereby enhancing performance. The Simple learning method influenced participants' breathing (Breathe), which impacted their center of gravity, balance, and movement connectivity. The Slow learning method was effective in providing participants with a relaxed state (Relax), facilitating body awareness and movement recognition. The Small learning method, which influenced body alignment (Align), improved physical and movement efficiency by eliminating unnecessary muscle use. Finally, the Smooth learning method allowed participants to connect their body and mind (Connect), which fostered psychological and physical stability, leading to a recognition of movement connectivity and the flow of the piece. Through the performance process through the 4Ss learning method, it was found that the participants could expect(Expect) their own dance( Dance). The results of this study demonstrate how the BRACED principle can be embodied in actual classes using the 4Ss learning method, suggesting the educational potential of enhancing performance ability through the embodied process of somatic ballet, which is based on a process-oriented approach.
Based on these results, the following recommendations are made. First, in this study, the 4Ss learning method served as a step-by-step process for ballet majors to learn movement through body awareness. This demonstrates its applicability in ballet education settings, as opposed to conventional ballet classes that focus on results or the execution of difficult techniques, emphasizing the process of creating movement. Based on body awareness and respect, this method can serve as an educational alternative that reduces the risk of injury due to excessive skill acquisition and enhances the efficiency and aesthetic quality of ballet movements.
Second, this study was conducted as a qualitative case study with three college ballet majors, limiting the generalizability of the findings. Therefore, future research should expand the scope of participants and works, conduct comparative studies across major levels, or conduct long-term studies to comprehensively verify the educational effectiveness of the 4Ss learning method. Such follow-up research will systematically expand the applicability of the 4Ss learning method to ballet education settings.
