This thesis redefines murmuring—an auditory metaphor—as a multilayered sensory structure in which personal narratives and folktale imagination are intertwined, and examines the process through which it is translated into visual tactility on the pictorial plane. By positing murmuring as a minute vibration prior to language and as a resonance of affect, this study aims to reveal the ways in which sensation operates through the materiality and formal language of painting.
Chapter 2 addresses the formation of murmuring and its sensory principles. It examines how murmuring emerges and analyzes the process by which sensation is generated within the interrelations of memory, time, and affect. In addition, by employing the Aarne–Thompson system (Aarne-Thompson classification system), this chapter structures multiple folktale narratives as a “rhythm of segmentation and assemblage,” and discusses how sensation is organized within narrative frameworks.
Chapter 3 focuses on how affect is transformed into visual and haptic sensation on the surface of painting. Through material experiments using bleached linen, transparent gesso, and paper pulp, this chapter explores methods for visually embodying the sedimentation of time and layers of sensation. Drawing on discussions of paper pulp and haptic perception, it further examines how sensation condenses into the material physicality of painting. This chapter also investigates the formation of a coherent structure that emerges through sensory interaction with the external environment, and comparatively analyzes how time, sensation, and narrative expand into a pictorial sensory structure.
This study centers on the painting series Murmuring, produced after 2024, and analyzes three episodes—Pond, Boat, and Gaksi—as its primary subjects. Through this analysis, it examines the process by which folktale imagination and material experimentation converge. Ultimately, this thesis reconceptualizes painting beyond a medium of image representation, proposing it instead as a field in which sensation is generated, transmitted, and accumulated, and presents murmuring as a process-oriented sensory structure formed through pictorial practice.
