This study aims to analyze the impact of lifelong education participation on
life satisfaction among people with disabilities. By examining the mediating
effects of self-esteem and disability acceptance, it aims to elucidate the
psychological and emotional impact of lifelong education and its contribution to
self-formation. Furthermore, by understanding the learning experiences and
perceptions of people with disabilities, it aims to explore future directions for
lifelong education that can ultimately contribute to improved life satisfaction, and
to offer discussions and recommendations on these directions.
To achieve these goals, this study utilized data from the "Disability Life Panel
Survey (Waves 1-6) from 2018 to 2023" conducted by the Korea Disabled
People's Development Institute. This mixed-methods study utilized quantitative
analysis and focus group interviews (FGIs). This approach sought to recognize
the strengths and limitations of each method and complement each other,
thereby fostering a deeper understanding of the research findings and their
implications. The quantitative study employed a pooled cross-sectional design,
targeting 26,700 adults with disabilities aged 19 years or older who participated
in the survey from 2018 to 2023. IBM SPSS 21.0 and SPSS PROCESS Macro
were used for the analysis. First, independent sample t-tests and one-way
ANOVAs were conducted to identify demographic characteristics that
statistically significantly impact life satisfaction. Next, regression analysis was
conducted to examine the impact of lifelong education participation on life
satisfaction. Self-esteem and disability acceptance were set as mediating
variables, and direct and indirect effects were analyzed using Model 4 of SPSS
PROCESS Macro. Finally, bootstrapping was performed, with a 95% confidence
interval, to verify statistical significance. A qualitative focus group interview(FGI) was conducted with five adults with disabilities (aged 19 or older)
registered under the Act on Welfare of Persons with Disabilities, who had at
least three years of experience participating in lifelong education. Participants
were selected from five categories (physical disability, brain damage, visual
impairment, hearing impairment, and intellectual disability). Participants
voluntarily expressed their willingness to participate. The interviews were
conducted remotely via an online video conferencing platform on Thursday,
September 25, 2025, and lasted a total of 60 minutes. Follow-up questions were
also provided via phone during the analysis process. Data analysis was
conducted using content analysis. The researcher, his/her supervisor, and a
doctoral researcher repeatedly and cross-referenced the interview recordings and
transcripts, organizing key concepts and extracting and categorizing meaningful
units.
The study results revealed that, first, participation in lifelong education for
individuals with disabilities had a positive and significant impact on life
satisfaction, and participation in lifelong education for individuals with disabilities
was found to increase life satisfaction. Second, participation in lifelong education
of persons with disabilities was found to have a significant positive effect on
self-esteem, and self-esteem, in turn, had a significant positive effect on life
satisfaction. Bootstrapping was performed to verify the significance of the
results, and it was confirmed that self-esteem had a partial mediating effect in
the path through which participation in lifelong education of persons with
disabilities affected life satisfaction. Third, participation in lifelong education of
persons with disabilities had a statistically significant positive effect on
acceptance of disability, and acceptance of disability had a significant effect on
life satisfaction. Similarly, the significance of acceptance of disability was
confirmed in the verification of the significance of the mediating effect using the
bootstrapping technique, and this confirmed that participation in lifelong
education of persons with disabilities had a partial mediating effect through
acceptance of disability on life satisfaction. Furthermore, based on the subjective
experiences and perceptions of the study participants, we analyzed seven
subcategories and 15 meaning units under three overarching categories: life
changes through lifelong education, psychological changes in self-esteem and
disability acceptance, and changes in perceptions of the educational environment.
As a result, we identified key factors demonstrating psychological and identity
changes in participants, such as the impact of learning participation on daily
recovery and emotional stability, a reevaluation of self-worth and abilities, and a
positive acceptance of disability identity. At the same time, we identified
environmental demands brought about by lifelong education experiences, such as
recognizing structural constraints such as educational accessibility, information
environment, and physical conditions, and highlighting the need for customized
education tailored to the characteristics of disabilities. Through this, we
confirmed that lifelong education is a crucial variable that restores individual
dynamism, strengthens self-efficacy, restructures perceptions of disability, and
fosters critical awareness of improving the educational environment.
The implications and suggestions based on these findings are summarized as
follows: First, the implications are as follows: First, participation in lifelong
education goes beyond mere learning, promoting self-development, expanding
social relationships, and psychological stability, demonstrating that it is an
important social welfare strategy for enhancing life satisfaction among people
with disabilities. Second, participation in lifelong education significantly enhances
self-esteem, and self-esteem is a key psychological resource leading to life
satisfaction. This highlights the need to systematically incorporate
self-esteem-enhancing elements such as self-understanding, recognition of
strengths, and provision of success experiences into program design. Third,
participation in lifelong education was found to be a key factor in enhancing
disability acceptance. The integrated mediation model, which proposes that
disability acceptance is enhanced through social and educational interventions
such as education, arts activities, and group experiences, was also validated in
the lifelong education of people with disabilities. Fourth, the integrated results of
quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed that lifelong education directly and
indirectly influences life satisfaction by enhancing self-esteem and disability
acceptance. Furthermore, the formation of these psychological resources hinges
on the quality of the educational environment, psychological safety, access to
information, and the inclusion of disability characteristics. Fifth, lifelong
education should be developed to promote self-understanding, identity formation,
and positive self-evaluation through customized program development,
psychological and emotional support, creating a safe learning environment,
strengthening social support networks, and expanding cultural and artistic
activities.
Following these recommendations, we propose the following: First, the policy
foundation for increasing participation in lifelong education for people with
disabilities should be strengthened. Second, an integrated lifelong education
content and operational system that encompasses not only vocational
competencies but also emotional and social development is needed. Third, an
integrated support system linking education, welfare, and employment is
required. Fourth, educational design should consider psychological safety and the
quality of interaction in an integrated education environment. Fifth, a customized
lifelong education system should be established that reflects the characteristics
and learning needs of each disability type. Sixth, institutional mechanisms are
needed to ensure continuous participation to enhance the effectiveness of lifelong
education.
Despite the above recommendations, this study has the following limitations.
First, participation in lifelong education was treated as a simple dichotomous
variable, failing to adequately reflect qualitative aspects of education. Second, the
validity of the scale is limited due to the insufficient reflection of variable
components by using existing panel data items. Third, various psychosocial
factors other than self-esteem and disability acceptance were not considered.
Fourth, the cross-sectional design limits the ability to establish causal
relationships, and the FGI's focus on a small number of participants limits the
generalizability of the qualitative results. Fifth, the FGI's focus on a small
number of participants from a specific region and institution limits the
generalizability of the qualitative results, and there is a possibility that some
researchers' interpretations may be influenced. Future research will require
sophisticated variable design, integrated analysis of various variables, a
longitudinal approach, and expanded participant populations.
