The global economy has recently faced severe inflationary pressures. Rising raw material costs and supply chain instability have compelled companies to pass on cost burdens to consumers, with shrinkflation emerging as a significant strategic option. Shrinkflation refers to the strategy of maintaining prices while reducing product size or weight, intended to minimize consumer resistance to direct price increases. However, research examining the psychological mechanisms through which this implicit price increase method is perceived by consumers and affects their attitudes remains insufficient.
This study aims to empirically analyze the differential effects on consumers' product attitudes when equivalent real price increases are presented through two different framing approaches: quantity-maintained-price-increase versus price-maintained-quantity-decrease (shrinkflation). Specifically, this research seeks to comprehensively verify whether perceived unfairness plays a mediating role and whether persuasion knowledge serves as a moderating variable.
The research model and hypotheses were established based on framing effect theory, equity theory, and the Persuasion Knowledge Model (PKM). Based on the framing effect whereby consumer judgments differ according to how identical information is presented, it was hypothesized that shrinkflation strategies, which consumers may perceive as more deceptive, would induce higher levels of perceived unfairness. For hypothesis testing, a scenario-based experiment using a fictitious potato chip product was designed, applying Weber's Law to ensure equivalence of economic loss between conditions by setting both price increase rate and quantity decrease rate at 30%. Surveys were conducted both online and offline, yielding 420 valid samples for analysis. Data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests, two-way ANOVA, regression analysis, and mediation and moderation analysis via SPSS PROCESS Macro.
The results revealed that, first, the price-maintained-quantity-decrease framing significantly increased consumers' perceived unfairness compared to the quantity-maintained-price-increase framing. Second, persuasion knowledge moderated the relationship between shrinkflation framing and perceived unfairness. Specifically, consumers with high persuasion knowledge perceived high levels of unfairness regardless of framing type, whereas consumers with low persuasion knowledge perceived significantly higher unfairness under the price-maintained-quantity-decrease framing. Third, higher perceived unfairness led to more negative product attitudes. Fourth, perceived unfairness fully mediated the relationship between shrinkflation framing and negative product attitude, confirming that unfairness perception serves as the core psychological mechanism in forming negative attitudes.
This study holds academic significance in empirically elucidating the psychological mechanisms underlying why corporate shrinkflation strategies are negatively received by consumers. From a practical standpoint, the findings suggest that using shrinkflation strategies for short-term gains may actually stimulate strong perceptions of unfairness among consumers, potentially causing serious damage to brand attitudes. In today's market where consumers with high persuasion knowledge are increasing, this study proposes that adopting transparent and honest communication strategies in pricing policies is the path to protecting brand equity from a long-term perspective.
In conclusion, when determining pricing policies, companies should not merely consider economic efficiency but must also consider the fairness aspect of how it is perceived by consumers. Implicit strategies such as shrinkflation may be risky choices that erode consumer trust, and this study emphasizes that honest communication is the foundation for sustainable growth.
