재즈 바이올린 연주자 ‘Stephane Grappelli’의 Trio 연주, ‘In A Sentimental Mood’(1963) 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

Stephane Grappelli는 재즈 바이올린을 대표하는 뮤지션으로 그의 연주에 대해서 많은 분석이 이루어져 왔다. 본 연구는 Stephane Grappelli와 Duke Ellington 그리고 Ernie Shepard가 함께 연주한 ‘In A Sentimental Mood’ 의 트리오 연주를 중심으로 각 악기의 역할을 분석하고 그 안에서 형성되는 연주 구조를 살펴보았다. 본 곡의 트리오 편성은 표면적으로는 세 악기가 함께 연주하는 형태이지만 실제로는 세 명의 연주자의 역할이 생각한 것과 차이가 있었다.

Stephane Grappelli의 연주는 곡 전반에서 선율을 이끌며 곡의 음악적 성격을 형성하는 데 중심적인 역할을 하고있다. 그는 연주 과정에서 악기의 특성을 드러내는 비브라토와 글리산도, 하모닉스 등 다양한 주법을 사용하고, 강약 조절을 통해 다이나믹의 표현과 다양한 장식음들을 구사하여 곡의 중심적인 역할을 수행한다. 반면 Duke Ellington의 피아노는 전면에 나서기보다는 화성적 안정감 제공에 집중하며, 그의 보이싱은 코드의 틀을 유지하기 위한 역할에 그치며 즉흥적 변형보다는 바이올린 선율 진행에 맞춘 조화로운 반주에 머문다. Ernie Shepard 역시 리듬의 틀을 유지하며 곡 전체의 흐름을 안정시키는 보조적 역할을 담당한다. 이처럼 세 악기 중 바이올린 만이 독자적인 표현을 펼치고 피아노와 베이스는 그를 중심으로 한 수동적 반주로 연주하고 있다.

본 연구의 초점은 클래식 음악에서 중심이 되는 선율 악기로 인식되고 있는 바이올린이 재즈 스타일에 맞게 음악을 표현하기 위해 전통적인 주법들이 어떻게 적용되는지, 또 어떤 새로운 주법들이 활용될 수 있는지 구체적으로 분석하는 데 맞추어져 있다고 할 수 있다.

이 연구를 통해 ‘In A Sentimental Mood’의 트리오 버전은 일반적인 재즈 트리오의 상호 대화적 구조와 달리 바이올린 독주를 위한 반주형 트리오로 구성되어 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 구성은 Duke Ellington이 가진 즉흥적 특성과는 다른 Stephane Grappelli의 바이올린을 돋보이게 하는 방향으로 설계된 연주임을 보여준다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 편성인 특성을 분석함으로써 향후 연주자 간 역할 분담 연구와 편곡적 접근에 참고가 될 수 있는 자료를 제공하고자 한다.

Stephane Grappelli is a musician representing jazz violins, and many analyses have been conducted on his performance. This study analyzed the role of each instrument, focusing on the trio of "In A Sentimental Mood" performed by Stephane Grappelli, Duke Ellington, and Ernie Shepard, and examined the performance structure formed in it. On the surface, the trio of this song is played by three instruments, but in reality, the roles of three performers were different from what was thought.
Stephane Grappelli's performance leads the melody throughout the song and plays a central role in forming the musical character of the song. He plays a central role in the song by using various techniques such as vibrato, glissando, and harmonics that reveal the characteristics of the instrument during the performance process, and by using dynamic expressions and various decorative sounds through strong and weak control. On the other hand, Duke Ellington's piano focuses on providing a harmonious sense of stability rather than coming to the front, and his vocalization only plays a role in maintaining the chord frame and stays in a harmonious accompaniment tailored to the progression of the violin melody rather than improvised transformation. Ernie Shepard also plays an auxiliary role in maintaining the rhythm frame and stabilizing the flow of the entire song. As such, only the violin among the three instruments has its own expression, and the piano and bass are played with passive accompaniment centered on it.
The focus of this study is on analyzing in detail how traditional techniques are applied and what new techniques can be used to express music according to jazz style, which is recognized as a central melodic instrument in classical music.
Through this study, it was confirmed that the trio version of 'In A Sentimental Mood' consists of an accompaniment trio for violin solo, unlike the interactive structure of a general jazz trio. This composition shows that it is a performance designed in the direction of making Stephane Grappelli's violin stand out, which is different from the improvisational characteristics of Duke Ellington. By analyzing the characteristics of such an arrangement, this study is intended to provide data that can be used as a reference for future research on role division among performers and an arrangement approach.
