Modern society is highly dependent on electricity, which serves as a core
infrastructure across various sectors. In such an environment, interruptions in
power supply can result in significant social and economic losses; therefore,
emergency generators have become essential facilities to ensure continuity of power
supply. In particular, in critical facilities such as medical institutions, power outages
may directly threaten patient safety and cause severe consequences including data
loss. Accordingly, emergency generators are widely deployed as key equipment to
secure operational stability and reliability, and they are subject to regular
inspection and systematic management in accordance with the Electrical Safety
    Management Act.
When power demand increases or utility power is interrupted, emergency
generators compensate for insufficient power to prevent blackouts and maintain
operational continuity. During generator operation, continuous power required for
starting and control processes is supplied by an independent battery system. These
batteries are typically configured as industrial lead-acid batteries, which have been
widely verified and applied in industrial fields. However, despite their limited annual
operating frequency, such batteries are exposed to long-term float charging and
repeated self-discharge during extended standby periods after generator shutdown.
These operating conditions promote sulfation caused by internal chemical reactions,
leading to battery life degradation. Furthermore, lead-acid batteries require periodic
inspection and replacement, and the associated disposal costs and environmental
impacts impose an ongoing burden in practical operation.
Recent studies have proposed hybrid emergency power systems and microgrid
architectures incorporating lithium-ion batteries to overcome the limitations of
lead-acid batteries. Although lithium-ion batteries offer high energy density and
longer cycle life, their application to existing emergency generator systems requires
significant structural modifications, including battery management systems (BMS),
protection circuits, and thermal management equipment. As a result, cost and
safety concerns limit their practical applicability in existing facilities.
To address these limitations, this paper proposes a hybrid emergency generator
system that integrates a photovoltaic (PV) power generation system while
maintaining the existing generator configuration and conventional lead-acid battery
structure. The proposed approach utilizes photovoltaic power as an auxiliary energy
source. During periods of sufficient solar irradiance, PV-generated power is
preferentially supplied to the existing lead-acid battery system and simultaneously
stored in an auxiliary photovoltaic-side battery. This operating strategy structurally
redistributes the continuous charging burden previously borne by the emergency
generator batteries. Consequently, the average state of charge (SOC) of the
batteries is stabilized, and the depth of discharge (DOD) is reduced, mitigating
sulfation phenomena under long-term float charging conditions. As a result, the
service life of lead-acid batteries is extended, while overall mechanical durability
and electrical reliability of the system are improved without compromising practical
    applicability.
In addition, the proposed system employs priority control circuits using timers
and relays to enhance the utilization efficiency of photovoltaic power. This
configuration enables continuous power supply to auxiliary equipment from the
initial startup stage of the emergency generator, thereby improving voltage
fluctuation rates and voltage drop characteristics simultaneously and contributing to
    overall power quality enhancement.
In conclusion, the photovoltaic-based hybrid emergency generator system
proposed in this study presents a practical improvement strategy that
simultaneously extends battery life and reduces maintenance costs while preserving
the conventional independent lead-acid battery configuration widely used in field
operations. Unlike previous studies that rely on structural modifications centered on
lithium-ion batteries, the proposed system enhances power supply stability and
operational continuity by integrating photovoltaic power into existing systems,
thereby maintaining mechanical durability and electrical reliability while ensuring
continuous power supply to auxiliary equipment in real-world applications.
