The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural relationships
among disability acceptance, self-esteem, and peer attachment in elementary,
middle, and high school students with developmental disabilities, and to
empirically analyze the differences in these pathways according to
developmental stages (elementary vs. secondary). For this purpose, data from
the 5th wave (2022) of the 'Disability and Life Panel Survey' were utilized,
and a total of 211 students with developmental disabilities (148 elementary
students and 63 middle/high school students) were selected for final analysis.
Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and PROCESS Macro (Model 4) to
perform descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and mediation analysis.
The main results of this study are as follows: First, significant positive
correlations were generally found among disability acceptance, self-esteem,
and peer attachment in students with developmental disabilities. However, in
the middle and high school group, the direct correlation between disability
acceptance and peer attachment was not significant, suggesting differences in
the relationships among variables according to developmental stages. Second,
the structural pathways differed depending on the developmental stage. In the
elementary school group, the pathway of 'peer attachment → self-esteem →
disability acceptance' was supported as a full mediation model, indicating that
positive peer relationship experiences enhance self-esteem, which in turn
promotes disability acceptance. Conversely, in the middle and high school
group, the pathway of 'disability acceptance → self-esteem → peer
attachment' was verified as a full mediation model, revealing that internalized
disability acceptance improves self-esteem, which then acts as an antecedent
factor enhancing the quality of peer relationships. Third, analysis of the entire
group reaffirmed that self-esteem is a crucial mechanism mediating the
relationship between disability acceptance and peer attachment.
These findings suggest that differentiated approaches based on
developmental stages are necessary for supporting the psychosocial
adjustment of students with developmental disabilities. It is suggested that
ecological support focused on peer relationships should be prioritized in
childhood, while internal interventions to strengthen disability identity and
self-esteem should be prioritized in adolescence. This study is significant in
that it moves away from previous linear research trends to identify the
reciprocal relationships and developmental differences among variables, thereby
providing fundamental data for establishing practical intervention strategies in
the field of special education.
