School violence is a significant social problem that extends beyond physical and emotional harm to individual students, posing a serious threat to the safety and educational functions of the school community as a whole.
In recent years, school violence has expanded into diverse forms such as verbal abuse, relational bullying, and cyberbullying, with its severity becoming particularly pronounced during early adolescence—a developmental stage highly influenced by peer relationships and social norms.
Early adolescence is a developmental transitional period characterized by heightened emotional sensitivity and increased peer orientation; without appropriate preventive interventions during this stage, school violence is likely to be repeated and entrenched, increasing the risk of maladjustment to school life.
However, existing school violence prevention programs are largely centered on lecture-based instruction or simple experiential activities, and thus fail to adequately reflect the evolving patterns of school violence and the developmental needs of early adolescents. Moreover, these programs have limitations in systematically enhancing the relational skills and conflict-coping abilities required in real peer interaction contexts.
Accordingly, there is a need for experiential preventive interventions that go beyond single-session programs and promote students’ emotional and relational competencies as well as behavioral change.
Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to develop a role-play–based school violence prevention program for early adolescents and to empirically verify its effectiveness. Based on an integrated theoretical framework combining social learning theory and psychodrama theory, this study established a participatory and experiential teaching–learning system in which observational learning, role enactment, emotional experiences, and reflection are systematically interconnected.
Drawing on needs assessments and prior research, the program was designed with a stepwise learning structure that sequentially fosters empathy, emotional expression and regulation, conflict resolution, and practical application.
Program development was conducted according to a four-stage development model, and to verify the effectiveness of the program, a class-based study was conducted with 75 early adolescents, divided into an experimental group, a comparison group, and a control group, each consisting of 25 students. The experimental group participated in the role-play-based school violence prevention program, while the comparison group received a conflict resolution–focused school violence prevention program; both programs were implemented twice a week for a total of eight sessions (45 minutes per session), and the control group received no intervention. All three groups completed pre- and post-tests assessing empathy, social competence, school adjustment, and attitudes toward school violence, and a follow-up test was conducted three weeks after program completion to confirm the persistence of the effects.
The results showed that the experimental group that participated in the role-play–based school violence prevention program demonstrated statistically significant improvements in social competence, school adjustment, and attitudes toward school violence compared to the comparison group and the control group, and some of these effects tended to be maintained at the follow-up assessment. Although group differences in empathy were limited in the quantitative analysis, qualitative data analysis revealed positive changes in emotional awareness and perspective-taking.
These findings suggest that role-play–based interventions are an effective approach to strengthening the emotional and relational competencies of early adolescents and preventing school violence. This study holds both research and practical significance in that it systematically developed an experiential school violence prevention program reflecting the developmental characteristics of early adolescents and the context of peer relationships, and verified its effectiveness and sustainability. Furthermore, the findings indicate the potential for the program to be utilized as a preventive education model applicable in school settings. Based on the results of this study, suggestions for future research as well as practical and policy implications were discussed.
