The present study aimed to examine the sequential mediating effects of self-reflection and meaning in life on the relationship between insecure adult attachment and life satisfaction among middle-aged adults. A survey was conducted among middle-aged adults aged 40 to 65, and a total of 359 valid responses, excluding cases with missing data or extreme responses, were included in the final analysis. Data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 and the Hayes’ PROCESS macro (version 4.2, Model 6).
The major findings of this study are as follows. First, insecure adult attachment was found to have significant negative effects on self-reflection, meaning in life, and life satisfaction. Second, self-reflection showed positive effects on both meaning in life and life satisfaction, while meaning in life also had a positive effect on life satisfaction. Third, self-reflection and meaning in life independently mediated the relationship between insecure adult attachment and life satisfaction, and they also functioned as sequential mediators in this relationship. In addition, the significance of the sequential mediating effects was confirmed for the subcomponents of meaning in life, namely the search for meaning and the presence of meaning.
Based on these findings, the theoretical and practical implications of the study are as follows.
First, this study empirically demonstrated that self-reflection and meaning in life sequentially mediate the process through which insecure adult attachment influences life satisfaction, thereby presenting a sequential pathway model that integrates cognitive reflection and existential meaning-making.
Second, by focusing on middle adulthood as a distinct developmental stage, this study provided a theoretical framework that explains adult attachment not as a fixed personality trait but as a modifiable psychological process, highlighting self-reflection as a higher-order cognitive mechanism linking attachment to meaning formation.
Third, the results confirmed that self-reflection and meaning in life are key variables in explaining life satisfaction among middle-aged adults, offering an integrative theoretical perspective that combines attachment theory and existential meaning theory.
Finally, the findings suggest that, in counseling and educational settings, strengthening self-reflection and facilitating a sense of meaning in life may be more effective strategies for enhancing life satisfaction among middle-aged adults with insecure attachment than directly attempting to modify attachment patterns.
These results provide practical implications and foundational evidence for the development of counseling interventions, psychoeducational programs, and preventive strategies aimed at promoting psychological well-being and life satisfaction in middle adulthood.
