This study aimed to examine the factors influencing sociality among adults with autism spectrum disorder from an expanded perspective and to analyze the structural relationships between sociality and disabling factors, social participation, family functioning, and self-concept. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of adults aged 19 years or older with autism spectrum disorder, recruited through disability-related organizations and institutions. A pilot survey was conducted from July 14 to August 13, 2025, followed by the main survey conducted between August 25 and October 2, 2025. Of the 402 participants surveyed, data from 358 respondents were included in the final analysis after excluding incomplete or careless responses. All variables demonstrated acceptable reliability (Cronbach’s α ≥ .60).
Data analyses were performed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 21.0, with statistical significance set at p < .05. Frequency and descriptive statistical analyses were conducted to examine data characteristics and normality. Exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis were performed to assess the factor structure and internal consistency of the measurement instruments. Correlation analyses and confirmatory factor analysis were subsequently conducted to evaluate model fit and examine the structural relationships. Because of conceptual overlap and inadequate discriminant validity, the initial hypothesized model was revised by removing the self-concept factor and adding correlated error terms based on modification indices. The modified model showed acceptable fit and was retained as the final research model, accounting for 38% of the variance in social participation, 56% in family functioning, and 53% in sociality.
First, disabling factors did not show a significant direct effect on sociality among adults with autism spectrum disorder; however, a significant negative indirect effect was identified through social participation.
Second, social participation had a significant positive direct effect on sociality.
Third, family functioning did not have a significant effect on sociality.
Fourth, the self-concept factor was excluded from the final structural equation model due to excessive correlations with other factors and insufficient discriminant validity identified through confirmatory factor analysis.
Fifth, disabling factors had significant negative effects on both social participation and family functioning, whereas social participation did not have a significant effect on family functioning.
Based on these findings, this study interpreted and discussed the structural relationships among key factors influencing sociality in adults with autism spectrum disorder within a social and environmental context.
The findings of this study identified the structural relationship between disabling factors and social participation as key influences on sociality among adults with autism spectrum disorder. Disabling factors did not directly affect sociality; rather, they exerted an indirect effect through social participation, highlighting the critical role of participation opportunities in the process by which experiences of discrimination and exclusion constrain the expression of sociality. Social participation emerged as the most influential factor with a significant direct effect on sociality, indicating that contexts in which social interaction and relationship formation occur serve as essential conditions for the development of sociality. In contrast, family functioning did not show a direct effect on sociality, suggesting that sociality in adulthood is shaped more by actual social experiences and relational contexts than by family-related factors. Overall, these findings suggest that sociality among adults with autism spectrum disorder cannot be sufficiently explained by individual abilities or family environments alone, but should be understood as a relational construct formed through accumulated experiences within everyday interactional and participatory contexts.
