Kindergarten is the first public educational setting in which children transition from family life to collective living. The spatial environment in this stage not only performs physical and functional roles but also exerts profound effects on children’s emotional stability, sensory experience, socialization processes, and exploratory behavior. During the sensitive developmental period of ages 3 to 6, children’s perceptual systems and self-expression abilities grow rapidly, and external environmental stimuli directly shape their psychological states and behavioral patterns. Therefore, providing a safe and developmentally appropriate learning and living environment through spatial design has become a key agenda in early childhood education and environmental design fields. This study aims to empirically examine the appropriateness of integrated kindergarten living-space design from the perspective of emotional design and to identify its impact on children’s emotional and behavioral responses.
Recent changes in social structure and educational environments have further accentuated this issue. The prevalence of nuclear families and declining birth rates have expanded parents’ expectations of kindergartens—from safety and care to emotional support, individualized development, and social competence enhancement. Meanwhile, the child-centered educational paradigm demands spaces that support autonomous exploration, interaction, and emotional regulation. Although prior studies have addressed safety, functionality, and aesthetics in kindergarten architecture, there is a lack of systematic and empirical analysis explaining how spatial design influences children’s emotions and behavior. The “integrated living space,” which encompasses learning, play, interaction, and rest, requires more in-depth examination due to its complex functionalities and emotional stimulation effects.
This research aims to establish a comprehensive analytical framework explaining the relationship between spatial design characteristics and children’s emotional and behavioral responses. Grounded in Environmental Psychology, Emotional Design Theory, and the Developmental Fit Model, the study proposes three core design variables—psychological safety, sensory stimulation, and spatial flexibility. It further examines how these variables, mediated by children’s emotional responses, affect behavioral outcomes such as exploratory behavior, autonomy, and spatial preference. The goal is to provide academic and practical foundations for optimizing integrated kindergarten living-space design through clarifying the design–emotion–behavior interaction.
A mixed-methods research design was adopted, integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches. First, a literature review was conducted to organize theories related to kindergarten spatial design and child psychological development and to establish research variables and hypotheses. Second, case analyses were performed to derive functional characteristics and psychological effects of various spatial design types. Third, structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to collect supplementary user feedback for validating the design outcomes. Finally, a two-stage experimental study was conducted: (A) naturalistic observation in real integrated kindergarten living spaces to code children’s emotional and behavioral reactions, and (B) statistical verification of how spatial design factors influence emotional responses and exploratory behavior. Data sources included movement trajectories, dwell time, exploration frequency, SD semantic-differential scales, facial and verbal responses, and feedback from teachers and caregivers.
Variables were operationalized as follows: psychological safety refers to predictability, order, and safety embedded in spatial structure (e.g., clear circulation paths, open yet controllable observation points); sensory stimulation encompasses color, texture, lighting, and acoustic elements that evoke sensory responses; and spatial flexibility includes functional convertibility, diversity of activity paths, and multimodal spatial use. Emotional responses include feelings of stability, intimacy, and interest, and behavioral responses include exploration, autonomy, immersion, and spatial preference. Data analysis employed integrated qualitative coding and quantitative statistical approaches, including ANOVA and regression, to verify the direct and indirect effects of design variables. Five hypotheses were tested to examine the influence of psychological safety, sensory stimulation, and spatial flexibility on emotional and behavioral outcomes, as well as the mediating role of emotional responses.
The empirical results revealed the following: (1) High psychological safety effectively reduced children's initial anxiety and enhanced their sense of security and acceptance of the environment. In scenes with ensured visibility and spatial order, children more readily developed trust and engagement. (2) Proper sensory stimulation enhanced exploratory interest and immersive behavior, with color contrast, lighting layers, and audiovisual interactions serving as major factors drawing attention. Excessive stimulation, however, risked distraction and cognitive overload. (3) Spatial flexibility promoted autonomous choice and creative expression, enabling children to combine activity paths and functional modules freely, thus improving self-directed engagement and adaptability. (4) Emotional responses played a key mediating role between design characteristics and behavioral outcomes, with positive emotional experiences contributing to the persistence and quality of behavior.
In conclusion, this study proposes and verifies a three-stage causal pathway—design → emotion → behavior—and clarifies how kindergarten living-space design variables influence children’s behavior through emotional processes. Practically, it provides evidence-based design guidelines for improving kindergarten environments. The findings suggest that balancing psychological safety, sensory stimulation, and spatial flexibility is essential to supporting children's emotional stability, autonomous exploration, and holistic development. Furthermore, the study underscores the long-term significance of spatial design for children’s social and creative development, presenting a developmental, emotion-centered design orientation. This contributes to the evolution of educational spaces into environments that integrate emotional care and learning development.
Finally, limitations regarding observation range, sample size, and interpretive constraints in integrating qualitative and quantitative data were acknowledged. Future studies should consider individual differences such as personality, sociality, and cognitive styles, and incorporate smart-sensor-based interactive technologies to verify emotional responsiveness and developmental appropriateness more precisely. By doing so, kindergarten spatial design may achieve more refined advancements in both theoretical and practical dimensions. This research expands the scope of emotional design into the domain of emotional experience in educational spaces and provides an integrated analytical framework for early childhood education environments, contributing to the interdisciplinary development of design studies and educational science.
