This study empirically investigated the structural pathways through which educational participation motivation influences academic achievement among adult college students. In doing so, it aimed to verify the mediating effects of grit and self-directed learning ability. The study was designed based on nine hypotheses established through prior research, and statistical validity was ensured through mediation analysis using SPSS 29 and Hayes' (2013) PROCESS macro. Each measurement tool used in the study utilized items with proven reliability and validity based on previously validated scales. All variables had VIF values below 10, demonstrating stability against multicollinearity (Lee Hye-min, 2021). Furthermore, significant positive correlations were confirmed among the study variables. Data were collected from 388 adult college students in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions. Based on the collected data, reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis, difference-in-difference analysis, multiple regression analysis, and path analysis were sequentially performed.
The results of the analysis based on the research hypotheses are as follows: Hypothesis 1: Analysis of the effect of educational participation motivation on grit revealed a positive(+) effect on grit.
Hypothesis 2: Analysis of the effect of educational participation motivation on self-directed learning ability revealed a significant positive(+) effect on self-directed learning ability.
Hypothesis 3: Analysis of the effects of grit on academic achievement revealed that both the subfactors of grit, Maintaining Interest and Persisting Effort, significantly contributed to academic achievement.
Hypothesis 4: Analysis of the effects of self-directed learning ability on academic achievement revealed that the subfactors of self-directed learning ability, Learning Assessment, Learning Planning, and Learning Implementation, all showed a significant positive(+) effect on academic achievement.
Hypothesis 5: Analysis of the effect of grit on self-directed learning ability revealed that grit had a significant positive(+) effect on self-directed learning ability.
Hypothesis 6: Analysis of the direct effects of educational participation motivation(subfactors → academic achievement) revealed that learning orientation, goal orientation, and activity orientation all had positive effects on academic achievement.
Hypothesis 7: Analysis of the mediating effect of grit revealed that educational participation motivation and grit had positive effects on self-directed learning ability.
Hypothesis 8: Analysis of the mediating effect of self-directed learning ability. In a mediation analysis based on bootstrapping (5,000 iterations), the mediating effect of grit was significant at 0.126(95% CI [0.047, 0.205]), and the mediating effect of self-directed learning ability was also significant at 0.064(95% CI [0.028, 0.110]).
Hypothesis 9: In the analysis of serial double mediation effects, the double mediation effect of educational participation motivation on academic achievement through the sequential process of grit → self-directed learning ability was significant at 0.129(BOOT SE = 0.031, 95% CI [0.074, 0.194]). The sum of the indirect effects(0.319) of the total effect of 0.679 corresponded to approximately 47%, indicating that a significant portion of the effect of educational participation motivation was expressed through psychological and behavioral pathways.
The policy implications of this study are as follows:
First, it demonstrates the effectiveness of an integrated approach encompassing motivation, personality, and learning strategies, moving beyond the traditional cognitive-focused perspective in explaining adult learners' academic achievement.
Second, it quantitatively demonstrates that learners with high motivation to participate in education must possess both internal psychological resources and learning execution skills to become high-achieving learners.
Third, this study strengthened academic sophistication by supplementing the conceptual overlap between the components and the content validity of the measurement tool.
Fourth, it provides practical implications for establishing policies for adult universities in a lifelong learning environment: Developing educational programs that foster learner motivation while simultaneously strengthening grit and self-directed learning is crucial.
Fifth, for the successful operation of adult universities, simply providing a curriculum focused on adult students is not sufficient. Institutional support for developing adult learners' psychological resources, such as grit and self-directed learning, and strengthening their behavioral strategies is essential.
Sixth, digital-based adult learner support policies provide the institutional foundation to support the path identified in this study: motivation to participate in education, grit, self-directed learning, and academic achievement.
Seventh, learning support policies tailored to the characteristics of adult learners are needed. Therefore, this study can serve as an important basis for improving the educational participation motivation of adult learners through these discussions and leading to a qualitative leap in grit, self-directed learning ability, and academic achievement.
