This paper proposes an equivalent two-dimensional finite element analysis (2-D FEA) model for the efficient design and performance analysis of axial permanent magnet motors (AFPMs). Conventional three-dimensional finite element analysis (3-D FEA) suffers from high computational costs and long analysis times. To overcome these limitations, the proposed 2-D FEA model accurately predicts electromagnetic characteristics while maximizing computational efficiency. In particular, it focuses on effectively accounting for radial end effects, which are often overlooked in 2-D models.
To achieve this, this paper presents a method for converting the geometry of an actual 3D AFPM into an equivalent two-dimensional linear model. To find an optimal balance between computational time and accuracy, the motor is divided into two, four, six, eight, and ten segments, and comparative analyses are performed. The results confirm that the two-segment model offers the best computational efficiency. To compensate for the accuracy degradation caused by the simple reduction in the number of segments, we applied the relative permeability correction technique, which is the core technique proposed in this paper. This technique quantitatively reflects the tip leakage flux, enabling the two-segment model to achieve an accuracy closer to the 3-D FEA results than the 10-segment model.
To verify the validity of the proposed 2-D FEA model, the simulation results were compared with the 3-D FEA results and actual experimental data. In particular, the reliability of the proposed correction method was verified by comparing its performance with that of a model without relative permeability correction. Finally, the prediction accuracy and practicality of the model were verified through back-EMF tests of a prototype motor.
