With the advancement of digital technology and the expansion of the cultural content industry, museums are transforming from static spaces focused solely on artifact preservation into immersive cultural environments that emphasize visitor participation and experiential engagement. Augmented Reality (AR), in particular, has emerged as a key medium that overlays digital information onto physical exhibition spaces, expanding sensory perception and supporting narrative understanding. Despite the increasing adoption of AR-based interactive exhibitions, many museums still reveal limitations characterized by technology-driven approaches that overlook visitor experience design, emotional engagement, interaction flow, and behavioral intention formation.
This study aims to theoretically and empirically examine how the experiential characteristics of AR-based interactive museum content influence the visitor’s behavioral intention formation process. Specifically, the research investigates how technological, content-design, and user-experience factors within AR exhibitions, together with interactive design elements, shape physical, virtual, and cultural interaction experiences and subsequently lead to visit intention, revisit intention, and recommendation intention. To establish the theoretical foundation, relevant literature on AR, interactive design, and behavioral intention was reviewed to derive a variable structure explaining the sequential relationship among experience, interaction, and behavioral outcomes.
Based on this theoretical framework, six representative museums—three in Beijing (the Palace Museum, the National Museum of China, and the Capital Museum) and three overseas (the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Louvre Museum)—were analyzed. The study compared the characteristics of AR content, interaction structures, spatial configurations, and forms of user participation across these museums. Through this analysis, relationships were identified among AR experience factors (technological components, content design, user experience), interactive design factors (manipulability, system responsiveness, user agency, emotional experience, spatial interaction), and behavioral intention factors (visit, revisit, recommendation). A structural equation model (SEM) was then constructed and empirically tested using survey data from visitors who had experienced AR exhibitions, yielding the following key findings.
First, AR experiences were found to produce multilayered engagement structures distinct from traditional panel- or audio-guide-based viewing. Spatial expansion and narrative reconstruction enabled through AR strengthened both cognitive understanding and emotional immersion, while visualized representations of an artifact’s historical context, production background, and symbolic meaning positively influenced memory formation and meaning-making.
Second, technological, design, and user-experience components of AR affected physical, virtual, and cultural interaction dimensions in different ways. Manipulation ease and system stability primarily enhanced physical interaction, whereas narrative structure and information clarity contributed more to virtual and cultural interaction.
Third, interaction experience played a central mediating role in forming behavioral intention. Physical interaction was more strongly associated with revisit intention, while virtual and cultural interaction were closely linked to visit and recommendation intentions. This suggests that hands-on engagement stimulates the desire to return, whereas cultural understanding and emotional resonance foster the desire to recommend the exhibition to others.
Fourth, cross-case comparison revealed that AR exhibition strategies vary across national, cultural, and policy contexts; however, the structural relationship in which AR experiences enhance visitor understanding, satisfaction, and behavioral intention was consistently observed. This confirms AR’s universal potential to elevate the quality of museum experiences.
Finally, the study proposes an integrated model connecting AR experience factors, interactive design factors, interaction experiences, and behavioral intentions. This model offers a conceptual framework for evaluating and designing AR museum exhibitions and extends previous research that primarily focused on technology acceptance or satisfaction. The findings underscore the practical importance of designing AR exhibitions not merely around technological novelty but around user participation structures and cultural meaning-making.
Additionally, the study confirms that the influence pathway of AR experiences follows a multilayered process rather than a linear structure, highlighting a “process-oriented AR experience model.” The sequential transition—from physical response (manipulation and movement), to virtual interpretation (cognition and understanding), to cultural meaning formation (empathy and interpretation), and finally to behavioral intention—demonstrates that AR functions as a cultural medium that induces psychological and behavioral change beyond visual enhancement. The empirical results provide practical guidelines for digital museum policies and AR exhibition planning, presenting evidence-based criteria for improving AR experience quality.
Moreover, the structural model analysis clarifies that the relationship between AR experience and behavioral intention is not independent but mediated and moderated through interactive design and interaction experience. This suggests that effective AR exhibition design requires a structural approach that prioritizes “technological implementation → interaction design → meaning-making.” Such insights bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application of AR exhibitions and contribute to expanding research on digital museum experiences.
