This study examined the sequential mediating effects of perfectionistic self-presentation and stress coping styles on the relationship between perceived parental psychological control and academic procrastination among university students. Specifically, the study analyzed how three subtypes of stress coping, namely problem-solving focused coping, social support seeking coping, and avoidance-centered coping, each form distinct sequential mediating pathways. Data were collected from 438 students enrolled in four-year universities across South Korea, and sequential mediation effects were tested using PROCESS macro Model 6.
The results were as follows.
First, regarding direct effects among the main variables, perceived parental psychological control had positive effects on perfectionistic self-presentation, academic procrastination, and avoidance-centered coping, while showing negative effects on problem-solving focused coping and social support seeking coping. Perfectionistic self-presentation positively influenced academic procrastination and avoidance-centered coping, and negatively influenced problem-solving focused coping and social support seeking coping. Additionally, academic procrastination was positively associated with avoidance-centered coping and negatively associated with problem-solving focused coping and social support seeking coping.
Second, all four potential mediators, including perfectionistic self-presentation, problem-solving focused coping, social support seeking coping, and avoidance-centered coping, demonstrated significant partial mediating effects in the relationship between perceived parental psychological control and academic procrastination.
Third, significant sequential mediating effects were confirmed across all three pathways, wherein perceived parental psychological control influenced academic procrastination through perfectionistic self-presentation and subsequently through each of the three coping styles.
The implications of this study are as follows.
First, this study extends prior research by verifying a sequential mediating structure in which perfectionistic self-presentation and three coping styles function sequentially in the process through which parental psychological control influences academic procrastination. In particular, by confirming that the social support-seeking pathway serves as the most critical sequential mediating route, this study highlights an interpersonal vulnerability pathway where heightened perfectionistic self-presentation inhibits help-seeking behaviors and the utilization of relational resources.
Second, this study empirically confirms in a university student sample that perfectionistic self-presentation is a dispositional factor that precedes all three coping styles. These findings demonstrate that perfectionistic self-presentation functions as a higher-order dispositional determinant that shapes and regulates the selection of coping styles in stressful situations.
Third, this study explains academic procrastination not merely as task delay, but as a process of progressive self-regulatory failure where perfectionistic self-presentation, triggered by parental psychological control, distorts coping style selection. Consequently, the study confirms that opposing coping pathways—the inhibition of problem-solving and social support-seeking versus the facilitation of avoidance-centered coping—operate under the same dispositional factor, thereby reconceptualizing academic procrastination as an outcome of the interaction among relational, dispositional, and regulatory factors.
Fourth, this study provides practical implications for university counseling and education by emphasizing the need for integrated interventions. Such interventions should aim to reduce academic procrastination by alleviating perfectionistic self-presentation while simultaneously strengthening problem-solving focused coping and social support seeking coping, and reducing avoidance-centered coping.
