The purpose of this study was to investigate how mothers from multicultural families' period of residence in Korea affects their adaptation to Korean life and their children's Korean language development, and to analyze the relationship between mothers' satisfaction with Korean life and Korean language development and children's language development. Previous studies so far have suggested that children's language development in multicultural families is affected by complex factors such as the language environment at home, parents' emotional stability, and social integration level. However, there were limited studies that comprehensively compared and analyzed parental adaptation and child language development by setting the period of residence as a central variable. Therefore, this study classified groups based on the period of residence and empirically explored the correlation and differences between the mother's cultural and linguistic adaptation and the child's Korean development level.
The study participants were 40 mothers from multicultural families residing in Korea, and were recruited by conducting an online survey in cooperation with the Language Development Center and local social welfare institutions. The data collection period was from July 1 to August 31, 2025, and the questionnaire consisted of a total of 31 questions, including satisfaction with Korean life, Korean use, language spoken at home, children's Korean development, language evaluation, and treatment experience. Among them, 24 items corresponding to research questions were used for analysis. For analysis, descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, chi-square test, and Pearson product-moment correlation analysis were performed using the SPSS Statistics 31.0 program, and the significance level was set to p<.05.
The results of the study are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in satisfaction with Korean life and use of Korean according to the mother's residence period (p<.001). The long-term resident group (more than 10 years) showed a higher average score in both variables than the short-term resident group (less than 10 years), and the correlation between satisfaction and use was also very high (r=.910, p<.001). Second, a significant difference was also confirmed in the type of language used in the home (p<.001). In the case of the long-term resident group, the rate of single use of Korean was high, while the rate of use of the native language was the highest in the short-term resident group. Third, the children's Korean development score was also significantly higher in the long-term resident group (p<.001), suggesting that the parents' residence period can be directly linked to their children's language development environment. On the other hand, there was no difference between groups in language evaluation and language therapy experience (p>.05), indicating that the use of language support services did not automatically expand according to the period of residence. Fourth, there was a high positive correlation between Korean life satisfaction, Korean use, and children's Korean development (r=.837, .910, p<.001), and in particular, the correlation between satisfaction and child development was found to be the highest.
These findings empirically confirm that the length of residence of mothers from multicultural families is a key variable affecting their children's language development and the language environment at home, suggesting that language and cultural adaptation support for early residence in multicultural families and language development intervention centered on parent-child interaction are essential. In addition, policy support measures such as designing step-by-step Korean language and life adaptation programs for families under 10 years of residence, development of guidelines for creating a language environment at home, and establishment of a language evaluation and language therapy linkage system are required. This study confirmed that parents' socio-cultural adaptation variables are closely linked to children's developmental outcomes, suggesting that the multicultural family support system should shift to an integrated consideration of the parent, child, and family environment.
