This study aims to systematically examine the effects of readability-centered user experience (UX) design in mobile learning environments for older adults, focusing on how such design influences learners’ engagement and fatigue. In particular, the study investigates whether older adults’ levels of digital literacy moderate the impact of UX design, thereby establishing theoretical and practical foundations for constructing age-friendly digital learning environments.
A preliminary study, consisting of in-depth interviews and pilot testing, was first conducted to identify core UX components that reflect older adults’ cognitive characteristics, visual processing capabilities, and mobile usage patterns. Based on these findings, UX scenarios with varying levels of readability were developed. Older adult participants were then randomly assigned to experimental conditions within a quasi-experimental framework and performed structured learning tasks. In the main study, learning engagement, learning fatigue, and digital literacy were measured using validated scales. The proposed hypotheses were tested through multivariate analyses and structural equation modeling (SEM).
The results of this study revealed statistically significant differences in learning immersion and learning fatigue according to UX design types in mobile learning applications for older adults. In particular, UX designs centered on readability effectively reduced older learners’ visual and cognitive load, significantly enhancing learning immersion while maintaining the lowest level of learning fatigue. In contrast, UX environments characterized by excessive visual information and complex interaction structures were associated with reduced immersion and accumulated fatigue. These findings empirically demonstrate that simplicity and clarity of information are critical determinants of the quality of learning experiences for older learners.
Furthermore, this study empirically identified that the relationship between learning immersion and learning fatigue follows an inverted U-shaped nonlinear pattern rather than the linear structure assumed in previous research. As immersion increases, learning fatigue initially rises due to heightened cognitive effort and attentional demands; however, once learners reach a certain level of qualitative immersion, task adaptation and cognitive automatization are facilitated, leading to a reduction in fatigue. This finding extends conventional approaches that have treated learning fatigue merely as a negative outcome variable by theoretically conceptualizing fatigue as a dynamic process that can be regulated depending on the quality of immersion and the learning design context.
Moreover, digital literacy was found to function as a key moderating variable in the relationship between UX design and learning immersion and fatigue. Older learners with higher levels of digital literacy experienced stronger immersion-enhancing effects and more pronounced fatigue-reducing effects from readability-focused UX designs. In contrast, learners with lower digital literacy tended to experience greater cognitive burden and fatigue even under the same UX conditions. These results indicate that older adults’ learning experiences are shaped not solely by UX design itself but by a structural mechanism involving interactions between UX design and learners’ digital competencies.
Taken together, these findings offer important academic contributions by providing an integrated empirical examination of UX design, learning immersion, learning fatigue, and digital literacy within the context of older adult learning. In particular, by experimentally validating the nonlinear immersion–fatigue relationship, this study extends existing immersion-centered learning research and offers a more nuanced theoretical framework for explaining older learners’ cognitive and emotional responses. From a practical perspective, the findings highlight the necessity of strengthening readability-oriented UX design, implementing staged and personalized interfaces based on learners’ digital literacy levels, and designing learning sessions that balance immersion and fatigue in mobile learning applications and lifelong education platforms for older adults. Ultimately, this study proposes user-centered UX design strategies that simultaneously enhance learning persistence and the overall quality of learning experiences for older learners.
