This study shows a PEC glycerol upgrading technology that uses glycerol, a waste product from making biodiesel, to fix the problems with photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems that make them more efficient and add economic value. The oxygen evolution reaction(OER) that happens at the anode of current PEC systems needs high overpotentials, which makes the system's photo-conversion efficiency lower. This study introduced the thermodynamically favored glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) as a substitute for OER and developed a WO3/Mo-BiVO4 heterojunction photoelectrode to enhancesystem performance and stability.
Hydrothermal synthesis of WO3 nanosheets on a tungsten (W) substrate, deep coating, and hydrothermal synthesis of a Mo-doped BiVO4 precursor were used to create the photoelectrode. The development of a stable monoclinic structure for BiVO4 was verified by XRD and Raman analysis. Mo6+ was successfully substituted into the V5+ sites within the BiVO4 lattice, increasing charge carrier concentration and causing changes in surface electronicstates, according to XPS analysis. The limited absorption range of WO3 was extended into the visible light region by BiVO4 deposition, according to UV-Vis analysis results.
The LSV curve for the WO3/Mo-BiVO4 heterojunction electrode exhibits a higher photocurrent density than the WO3/BiVO4 electrode, according to an evaluation of the PEC performance. In particular, it was quantitatively shown that under GOR conditions, the photocurrent was maximized and the onset potential was significantly lower than OER. This is because the GOR only needs to transfer two electrons, while the OER needs to transfer four, increasing the PEC system's efficiency in producing hydrogen. The WO3/Mo-BiVO4 (GOR) electrode had the lowest charge transfer resistance of all the electrodes, according to an analysis of the Nyquist plot. The combination of Mo doping and the quick kinetics of the GOR reaction results in a low Rct value, which increases the rate at which photo-generated holes (h+) are consumed and most successfully inhibits chargerecombination. This implies that the production of high-value-added products from glycerol oxidation is economically feasible. Additionally, Mo doping enhances the photoelectrode's lattice stability even in highly acidic environments (pH 2), allowing for long-term stable PEC operation, according to Chronoamperometry (CA) measurements. In the end, this study suggests a novel catalyst design principle that uses Mo doping and heterojunction design to simultaneously satisfy the efficiency and economic viability of PEC systems.
The inefficiency of photoelectrochemical systems is anticipated to be addressed by the WO3/Mo-BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode created in this study, which will also help advance technology in the conversion of glycerol, a waste byproduct of biodiesel production, into materials with high value.
