Inductive wireless power transfer (IWPT) is rapidly developing as a convenient, contactless means of delivering power across applications such as small-scale consumer electronics to large-scale electric vehicles and vessels. Progressively, IWPT systems have migrated from the use of a feedback path from the secondary-side to the use of primary-side identification of the secondary-side output parameters. A central challenge in this IWPT design and its primary-side control is the accurate identification of secondary-side parameters, notably load resistance, output load current and voltage, as these parameters affect power transfer in the system. In a practical system that eliminates the communication channel of the feedback of its measurements from the receiver to the transmitter, parameter identification is performed from the primary-side quantity measurements alone in order to keep the cost and complexity low. Unfortunately, primary-side voltage and current measurements are corrupted by measurement and process noise during acquisition, and purely analytical-based conventional identification methods tend to propagate and amplify these noise. Likewise, other conventional alternatives either disrupt power transfer operation in the system or require extra hardware implementation. These limitations create a necessity for a non-disruptive, real-time primary-side identification strategy that handles noise and dynamic load changes. This thesis, therefore, aims to develop and experimentally validate a practical two-step primary-side identification strategy. First, the output load resistance is recognized analytically as a baseline parameter. Then, based on the recognized resistance parameter, a state-space dynamic Kalman model of the system is derived to track the output load voltage as the second step. This two-step identification strategy has the advantage of robust estimation in the presence of noise and load variations as it decouples the nonlinear system via a linear estimator without disrupting normal power transfer in the system. Also, in order to observe performance of the proposed identification strategy under off-resonance operation scenarios, a digital phase detector finite state machine is implemented to produce the phase angle change between the primary- side voltage and current. The efficacy of the proposed identification approach is confirmed through simulation and experimental validation using a 75 W IWPT hardware test-bench. Under dynamic operation, the proposed two-step identification approach reduces the estimation error by 32 % at maximum variation range.
