Traditional point cloud detection models, such as those using LiDAR or 4D radar, are known for their high accuracy but often entail significant computational demands, making them less suited for edge environments. To overcome this limitation, we introduce EdgePillars, an edge-efficient 4D radar object detection framework designed specifically for resource-constrained embedded systems. EdgePillars features a Hybrid Voxel–Pillar Encoder (HVPE) that generates height-aware Bird's-Eye-View (BEV) features and a lightweight State-Space Model (SSM) based backbone equipped with the EdgePillars Block (EPB), which effectively captures long-range spatial dependencies with linear-time complexity.
When evaluated on the K-Radar dataset, EdgePillars achieves 64.8% AP_3D and 68.3% AP_BEV under IoU=0.3 while delivering 20.3 FPS on the Jetson Orin Nano. In a range of adverse weather conditions, including fog, rain, and snow, EdgePillars consistently outperforms existing radar-based state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, EdgePillars strikes a favorable balance between parameter size and memory usage, establishing a practical Pareto front that facilitates deployment on memory-limited edge hardware. These findings confirm that EdgePillars provides both robust accuracy and high efficiency, offering a viable solution for 4D radar perception in autonomous driving systems.
