Cyber-physical systems (CPS) simulate, analyze, and control real-world problems through interactions between physical entities and digital twin. In particular, cyber-physical transportation systems (CPTS) enable realistic traffic simulations based on precise vehicle state estimation. However, vision-based state estimation remains challenging due to the inherent limitations of 2D observations, camera distortions, and inaccurate object detection. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a digital twin-based vehicle state estimation framework. First, a static digital twin reflecting road information is constructed and its accuracy is validated against the satellite imagery. Then, a genetic algorithm-based camera calibration precisely estimates the camera parameters of real and virtual cameras, enabling the transformation of image coordinates into world coordinates. Next, vehicles detected in video are reprojected into the digital twin, and their positions are refined considering vehicle size and geometry. Finally, weighted moving average filter and Kalman filter suppress noise and refine estimates of vehicle position, velocity, and heading. Experiments at the Ulsan Gongeoptap rotary demonstrated a digital twin construction accuracy of 98.3% and camera calibration error within six pixels in 4K video. Vehicle state estimation errors remained within 1%, validating the framework as a core technology for CPTS-based traffic simulation.
