버블로 상징한 현대사회 속 자아 : 연구자의 미디어아트 작품 〈Bubble:Face〉를 중심으로 = The Bubble as a Symbol of the Isolated Self in Modern Society

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우리가 마주한 시대는 편리함과 연결을 약속하지만 현대 사회에 방대한 정보와 급속히 변화하는 흐름은 오히려 개인이 자기 탐색의 시간을 상실하고 정서적으로 소진되는 상황을 초래하고 있다.
본인의 작업은 이러한 맥락에서 버블과 빈 얼굴이라는 조형적 요소를 통해 인간 존재의 연약함과 정체성의 유실, 고립감, 그리고 자기 탐색의 결여를 시각화하고자 한다.
석사학위 청구전 작품인 〈Bubble:Face〉에서 투명한 비닐 소재로 제작된 버블은 헬륨 가스를 이용해 공간 내에 떠다니며, 고요한 전시장 안에 느리게 흐르는 시간의 공간을 제안한다. 실사 영상과 AI 기반 영상 소스를 결합하여 제작한 영상을 두 대의 프로젝터를 통해 전시장에 설치하였다. 연속적으로 나타났다 사라지는 빈 얼굴 이미지와 버블의 메타포를 통해 소외되고 지친 자아의 회복을 위한 시간과 사색의 공간을 미디어아트 작품으로 제시하고자 한다.
작품 〈Bubble:Face_01〉의 투명한 아크릴 박스 안에 설치된 하얀 새들은 빠르게 변화하는 사회 속에서 소외되고 소진된 지친 개인을 은유한다. 좁고 투명한 박스 안에서 날아가는 법을 잊어버린 하얀 새처럼, 자신의 고유성을 상실한 자아는 어딘가를 서성이며 방향을 찾지 못한다. 이 하얀 새들을 둘러싸고 있는 두꺼운 투명막은 소외된 개인의 단절된 경계이자, 동시에 회복의 가능성을 품은 양면적 공간을 의미한다.
본 연구는 전시 공간 안에서 관객이 느려진 시간을 체험하고 나아가 사색할 수 있는 공간을 제안하는 석사학위 청구전의 주제적·조형적 요소를 고찰한 것이다. 생성과 소멸을 반복하는 버블의 영상과 빈 얼굴을 응시하는 과정을 통해 관객에게 고유한 자기 자신을 마주할 수 있는 ‘빈 여백의 시간’을 제안한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In an era that promises convenience and hyper-connectivity, the contemporary individual paradoxically faces an erosion of self-reflection, becoming increasingly exhausted and fragmented by the overwhelming flow of information and rapid societal transformation. Within this context, my work visualizes the fragility of human existence, the loss of identity, and the sense of isolation through the sculptural and media-based elements of ‘Bubble’ and ‘Empty Face’. The piece featured in the MFA exhibition, Bubble : Face, utilizes transparent inflatable forms suspended within the exhibition space, powered by compressors and helium gas. This creates an environment in which time appears to slow down, establishing a quiet spatial atmosphere. A dual-channel video installation, produced through a combination of live-action footage and AI-generated visual sources, projects the repetitive emergence and disappearance of an empty face. Through the metaphorical interplay between the bubble and the hollow facial image, the work proposes a temporal and spatial site for the recovery of a weary and alienated self. In Bubble : Face_01, white birds enclosed within a transparent acrylic box metaphorically embody the vulnerable individual, isolated and depleted within today’s accelerated social structure. Like birds that have forgotten how to fly within a narrow, transparent enclosure, the self-estranged from its intrinsic uniqueness-wanders without direction. The thick transparent membrane surrounding them functions both as a boundary of disconnection and as a dual space containing the potential for restoration. This exhibition invites viewers to experience a slowed temporality and engage in a contemplative spatial encounter. Through the process of gazing at the momentary generation and dissolution of the bubbles and the silent confrontation with the empty face, the work opens a space of ‘empty temporal margin’ in which individuals may rediscover and recover their own presence.
